DAVID LOCKE Obituary

LOCKE, David H. Of Wellesley and Holliston, a longtime Wellesley attorney and legislator, died December 12, 2019, after a brief illness. Born in Boston on August 4, 1927, Senator Locke, the son of Dr. Allen W. Locke and Florence Henry Locke, was raised and attended public schools in Wellesley with his three siblings. In 1945, Senator Locke graduated Wellesley High School a year early in order to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon his discharge, he attended Harvard College, class of 1951, and Harvard Law School, class of 1954. While in law school, Senator Locke married the late Barbara Blood and they had five children: David B. Locke, Jeffrey A. Locke, Jennifer Locke, Amy (Locke) Hiam and John A. Locke. Four of his five children followed him into the legal profession, and sons David B. Locke and Jeffrey A. Locke are currently serving as Massachusetts state court judges. In 1955, Senator Locke was a founding partner in the law firm of Dempsey, Jameson and Locke, located in Wellesley Square. Up until the time of his death, he continued to practice at the same location; the law firm becoming Jameson, Locke and Fullerton and later Locke, Fullerton and Lundwall. For the past twenty-seven years, he enjoyed practicing law with his son John A. Locke. Senator Locke was a longtime leader in the community with a distinguished record of service to the town of Wellesley. He was first elected to the Town Meeting in 1949 and re-elected for forty years. He served on the Wellesley Advisory Committee and later on the Board of Selectmen, where he served as Chairman. In 1960, at the age of thirty-three, he was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served for eight years. In 1968, he was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate, where he served for twelve terms, retiring as the Senate Minority Leader. He was widely regarded as a skilled orator, master of the rules of Senate debate, and a tenacious and eloquent advocate for the taxpayers of the Commonwealth. He was often called the "Greater Debater." Senator Locke leaves behind his dear friend and companion Marie Navin of Holliston, his five children and their spouses, and ten loving grandchildren. Visiting Hours are from 4 – 7 pm on Wednesday at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., Route 16, WELLESLEY. Funeral from the Funeral Home on Thursday at 9 am, Mass at St. John the Evangelist, 9 Glen Road, Wellesley Hills at 10 am. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. As the steward/bartender at the West Dennis Yacht during the summer of 1973 I recall Senator Locke approaching my bar after a day of sailing. I had already been instructed to serve his cocktail in his special glass so I was a bit nervous as I mixed his drink. He reached out his hand, introduced himself and put me at ease. He knew I had just graduated from Boston College so we talked about BC, my plans for the summer and the future ahead. I had been prepped that this man was one of the most important members of the club so treat him accordingly. He couldn't have been nicer. This important man seemed genuinely interested in me, the lowly steward. Becoming friends with his children, I was fortunate to enjoy his company over the coming years. He was kind, intelligent and possessed a lambent wit.

I was sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to Dave, Jeff, Jennifer, Amy and John.

There is not enough space to explain the greatness of this Man. My family was also fortunate enough to be raised in Wellesley, Senator Locke all but saved my life in the one time of my dire need. An Altruistic "friend". The unselfish concern for the welfare of others. That was who he was. Whether having lunch at Casey's diner in Natick or debating on the Senate floor. A compassionate professional. My late Dad was so proud to be good friends with Senator Locke. Neither could be replaced and both bring a tear to my eye in their passing. Hopefully this is taken in the proper context - when talking with him, my "humble" line to him was always that he was the only Repulican I always voted for (of course he would laugh). My deepest, heartfelt sympathy to his entire family and all who had the privilege of knowing this "Special" Man.

It is with the greatest sadness that I write this entry. David Locke was a lifelong friend of my father's and they shared so many wonderful childhood stories and memories. Dave was one of the kindest, most lovely gentlemen that I will ever have had the pleasure of knowing and I cannot express how his friendship to both of my parents made such an impact in their lives. I will be forever grateful to him for his generosity and thoughtful wisdom, and for standing for all the important values that are so dear to all of us. He absolutely had a life lived to the fullest, and I wish his family all the best as they remember his amazing spirit and history.

Serving with David in the Massachusetts Senate was a truly enriching experience. If one simply listened when he debated, there were lessons to be learned in logic, eloquence and wit. (although being a member of a different party, I was sometimes the victim of that wit). His family may be rightfully proud of a good man and true leader whom I came to admire and respect. I only remember this name in the papers decades ago, yet I mourn the loss of this great Bay Stater/attorney/legislator, David Locke. I never met him or lived in his town, but he was truly great, honest, and personable in everything he did. If there were more David Lockes in public service, here, in D.C., and our country, we wouldn't have had the sadness and division we are
going through today. Farewell to Sen./Atty./David Locke and sorry for his family's loss. RIP.
* God Bless America. Pray for our country.

David Locke was a role model and mentor to me during my early political career. His integrity, devotion to democracy. and compassionate conservatism were motivating and a conscience. It was an honor to serve in the MA House when he helped lead in the MA Senate.

Kathleene joins me in celebrating David life and public service.

David Locke had served in the Massachusetts legislature for many years by the time I arrived there and his reputation was unmatched: a man of conviction, courage and leadership skill who nevertheless was approachable and caring.

In the late 1980s we served as Republican leadershe in the Senate and myself in the Houseand had to work closely on strategy and tactics at a time of great political challenge and excitement in Massachusetts and the nation. I cannot overstate how privileged I feltand still feelto work so closely with a colleague so steadfast, brilliant and full of good humor.

David Locke's lifetime of serviceto his nation, his state and his communityis truly an inspiration and hopefully a source of great comfort to his wonderful family and his countless friends and admirers.

As the youngest of my family, I did not get to spend time with the Locke kids while they lived on Swarthmore Rd. But I do remember that my father- who was loathe to EVER ask anyone for a favor- was convinced by my mother to pull a string and get me an appt. at the DMV after I had failed the first (written) test. I'm sure never a big deal to him- although who knows what you'd have to do to get a favor at the DMV. But it was huge to an impatient 16 yr. old. And he always treated me with respect. Condolences to the whole Locke family.

My family lived across Swarthmore Road from the Locke family and I have many great memories of Senator Locke. I campaigned door to door for him and he is probably why I am a Republican today. While in elementary school I walked on the brook path to school with Jenny every day. I remember him making breakfast for his 5 children as chaos reigned. He was a loving and wonderful man and I am glad he had such a long and successful life. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Senator Dave Lock was, clearly, one of the great state legislative leaders in the long history of the Commonwealth. His unquestioned integrity and extraordinary leadership resulted in countless achievements for the people of Massachusetts. A highly valued friend and ally, he could also be a formidable opponent on the issues. Always a gentlemen in the best sense of the term and widely respected by politicians of both parties and all points on the ideological compass, he was truly a class act as a public servant. Joanne and I send our deepest condolences to the Locke family. We are all diminished by his passing.

I worked at the Senate Presidents office for eight years.I had the
pleasure of watching many debates by Senator Locke during that time.
from 1982 to 1990 He was forceful, insightful, knew his subject matter and
generally came out on top. He along with Senator John Parker were a
formidable pair. There was no vitriol,no personal attacks, but only respect
shown to the opposition and to the Senate as an institution..He was a true
public servant, a sort sadly missing today. Well done Senator Locke.
Rest in Peace
