JOSEPH INCAGNOLI Obituary

INCAGNOLI, Joseph Alia Joe "Harvard" Incagnoli, a creative force in the revival of Asbury Park, sadly passed away at home on Sunday, March 24, 2019. Joe was born in 1959 and grew up in Jeffries Point, East Boston. He was the son of Mae Mae Vitale, and Joe "Shoemaker" Incagnoli. He is survived by his son Aidan Mars, sisters Rosemary Trainor and her wife Barbara; Maureen Massaro and her husband Enio; his nieces Carla Massaro and Marisa O'Donnell and his grandnephew Lucca. Joe received a scholarship to Harvard University, where he studied Archaeological Anthropology and graduated cum laude. He worked as Assistant to the Director of the Peabody Museum and accompanied the Comprehensive Survey of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the central Arabian desert. Later, during a summer spent working on an East River dig near Wall Street, his sole discovery was that he really missed his recording equipment and decided to pursue a career as a musician and producer. He become active in the Boston-Cambridge music scene where he co-founded Fort Apache Recording Studios (Pixies, Bosstones, Morphine, Lemonheads, Throwing Muses, Dinosaur Jr., etc) & Helldorado Productions, which brought rock music to the now-venerable Middle East Restaurant. He was the first recipient of the WFNX/Boston Phoenix Poll Top Local Producer title. In 1999 he moved to NYC where he co-owned the World Tribal Soundz music store and won the first MOTH NYC Annual Grand Storyslam. He made the move to Asbury Park in 2001 where he continued to play music and worked as soundman for the Saint and Wonder Bar. In 2009/10 he was honored with Asbury Music Awards for Top Americana, Top Multi-Instrumentalist & Top Avant-Garde Act for the 3-year run of The Long Weekend Variety Show, a Monday night music, poetry and trivia show co-hosted by partner Mallory Massara. Joe co-founded and was program director of the Media Center @ Ballard, where he taught music and technical skills to economically disadvantaged youngsters. He was a multi-instrumentalist and recorded and gigged with local bands Dub Proof, Velveeta, Cockwalkers, and Keith Monacchio & the Dustup Troubadours to name a few. Joe recorded and released many albums, his latest in 2016 was a double solo album Hudgemabudge, which he self-produced as "Doctor Danger", playing all of the dozen plus instruments himself. As well as a talented musician and producer, he was also an author. His book "The Velvet Underground and Nico", part of the 33 1/3 series, has sold over 100,000 copies and been translated into six languages. In 2015 Joe founded the gARTen @ 713 Cookman, a black light community art garden/gallery, dedicated to found objects and "trash art". Joe was that rare thing - a true Renaissance man, who will be missed by all who knew him. Services private.

I often am reminded of the fond thoughts of my times with Joe...
From when I first met him while in the band maybe pete as he was doing sound at The Saint in Asbury Park.

Whenever we played there, I always hoped he would be manning the board and looked forward to getting there as early as I could just to hang out and talk with him.

Always engaging, Joe´s gift for conversing with an innately dry wit would enhance what we agreed on with additional perspective (and a deft quality to debate what we, or anyone else involved, did not agree on).

I was fortunate to be involved with him on an ongoing basis after that throughout those early days of Asbury´s revival.

To this day, he is one of THE most beautiful and unique people I´ve ever met in my life... Leaving an indelible mark on my soul with a a legacy that inspires me to be a better person and friend to all those I care about.

Rest In Peace, Joseph!
YOU ARE MISSED!!!

We learned to play music together, along with Anthony Rauseo back in the '70's, and we went on to play clubs in Boston and beyond. Those are memories that will stay with me for the rest of my days. Now you're with Cunningham and Anthony. Rock the heavens, brother.

Joe...you were a really great guy. I'll always be honored to have known you as a good friend from Jeffries Point growing up together in the bad old days. I remember the last time I met you was just after graduating Harvard & you told me you were going to pursue archeology professionally but that your heart was set on promoting Indie rock & whole new forms of musical expression. Then came Ft. Apache & you became famous. In the end the measure of a person is how & how much one gives back to society. Joe, you always went above & beyond as a friend. mentor, artist, author, ambassador for new music, role model etc. Rest in peace Joe...know that you are loved & missed. Mallory, you have my deepest condolences..Joe was a great guy. Way to go Joe!!!

Joe Harvard was so much more than he ever lead us to believe he was, and we didn't have to know any of the amazing things he did (as I, for one, must say I knew little of the total breth of his vast accomplishments)... All we had to know was what a joy he was to be around to know that this was truly a inique man and thoughtful and knowledgeable human being. Someone you look forward to seeing... ALWAYS.

I feel the most grateful that Joe Harvard chose Asbury Park as a place to go in his purposeful life, and that it happened in a time when my love affair for that section of this great state was revived. That I got to see Joe frequently in a 6-1/2 year stretch of time while In the band I was in.... Was something I will never take for granted.

I only wish that had lasted longer, but will be forever grateful to him for that time (and, again, that he made that choice when he did).

To those closest to Joe, I send my utmost sincere and heartfelt condolences. I could never imagine how hard it must be to lose such a wonderful friend. I was as broken up about Joe's passing from the strength of distant memories (mostly from more than a decade ago)... And I know Joe would never want us to be down... But, those who had the vivid and recent experience of time with this addictively irresistable person have it the hardest.

My heart is with you all... And my salute to you, Joe, is that your inspirational legacy has left a palpable feeling within my soul to want to be a better person every day.

Thank you, Mr. Incagnoli!
