MICHAEL BLAKE Obituary

BLAKE, Michael Harlan Michael Harlan Blake, 81, of Exeter, New Hampshire, and formerly of Marblehead, MA, passed away peacefully on October 3rd at RiverWoods Exeter after a more than ten-year battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Mike was born in Wilmington, DE on April 10, 1936 to the late Weston Holt Blake and Anne (Phillips) Blake. He graduated from Wilmington Friends School in 1954 where he was a standout football linebacker, basketball forward, and baseball catcher. He received his diploma from Wesleyan University in 1960, after spending 1956-1958 in the US Naval Reserves aboard the destroyer USS Compton out of Newport, Rhode Island. Mike met Susan Welles Livingston of Kensington, MD in the fall of his senior year at Wesleyan. They were married in September 1960 and together for 25 years. Mike began his career with the Budd Company in Philadelphia, he then moved to Boston with the former Bache & Co. After executive roles at Lowden Tree & Landscape (Needham, MA) and Dalton Electric (Beverly, MA), he finished his career with Harvest Capital Management of Concord, NH, retiring in 2002. He lived in Marblehead, MA for over 25 years where he indulged his love of sports and the outdoors. He coached youth soccer, played in a men's basketball league, and hiked the mountains of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Colorado. Mike is survived by his former wife Susan Livingston of Marblehead, and his four children Rebecca Osborne of Newburyport, MA, Amanda Gould of Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, UK, Philip Blake of Boulder, CO, and Grace Allaire of Concord, NH; his cherished grandchildren Casey Anne Osborne and Matthew Lowell Osborne of Newburyport, MA; his sister Judith (Blake) Schumacher of Chatham, MA, and nephews Michael Schumacher and David Schumacher, and niece Jennifer Schumacher Harper. Mike was predeceased by his second wife, Penelope Stowell. Final arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made in honor of Michael to the Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter of The Alzheimer's Association online at http://www.alz.org/manh/

I was saddened to learn of Mike's passing. We were shipmates aboard the USS Compton and played basketball and softball together for our ship. Mike was a bright and strong man and one of the guys that encouraged me to enter college after I mustered out of the Navy. I have been forever grateful for Mike and the other guys for that.
