BERNARD COOPER Obituary

COOPER, Bernard S. Of Norwood, MA, passed on Sunday, Jan. 24th, at the age of 72, after a brief journey with cancer. Born Feb. 24, 1948, to the late Otis and Yetta Cooper of Norwood. Survived by his wife, Connie, of thirty-seven years; and his four children, Sam and his companion Brinni, Alisha and her companion Sam, Josh, and Amelia and her husband Michael. He is also survived by his sister, Marianne and her husband David, and her children, Daniel and Sarah. Graduate of Norwood High, class of 1965, and graduate of Tufts University, he went on to work for the town of Norwood for forty-nine years where he served as assistant town manager and civil defense director. He loved spending his summers at Blueberry Hill while spending his winters helping other people shovel. You could usually catch him driving around in his recognizable pickup truck, checking in on his neighbors and offering a helping hand. A proud patron of the Mug'n Muffin and the Brookside Cafe, Bernie was a regular and welcome face to local business all across town. He was known to allocate an extra hour whenever he left somewhere just so he could say goodbye to everyone present. A staple of Norwood, Bernie worked tirelessly to the end and wouldn't have wanted it any other way. His family is beyond humbled by the outpouring of love and support. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations in Bernie's name to the Norwood Circle of Hope, P.O. Box 421, Norwood, MA 02062 or the Norwood Food Pantry, 150 Chapel St., Norwood. You could not ask for a better friend than Bernie Cooper. I was a classmate of his all through high school. We had the same circle of friends. Bernie would often host Friday night parties. I also remember visiting his father's hardware store which was a fixture in town. As we age we begin to lose our contemporaries, but the loss of some can resonate more than others. For me Bernie's passing strikes a nerve that's hard to accept. I spoke to him occasionally over the years and I was always struck by how devoted he was to his family. I wish them all well and hopefully they can take some solace in the knowledge that their husband, father, and grandfather was truly a wonderful person. Rest in peace Bernie.

On behalf of ALL Norwood residents, I want to thank Bernie Cooper so much for his years of service and commitment to the Town of Norwood, MA.
He was a good man, who had a good life and he left us way to soon.

Bernie is the only Cooper that Elsa and I ever had the pleasure of meeting. What a gem of a man he was. Of the many carillon recitals that I've been privileged to play at Norwood's Town Hall over the years, Bernie missed attending only one. His winning smile and sincere handshake were so very welcome after descending the tower. Bernie was a tireless advocate for that tower's beautiful instrument and in that capacity he will be difficult to replace. We offer Bernie's family our deepest condolences on this sad occasion.
