Dear Kate, I was shocked and saddened to learn today of Marty's passing. Marty was a brilliant economist who I
knew when we came up to Oxford in the autumn of 1961. He was doing a study on the British NHS under Ursula Hicks, but still intended at that time to become a medical doctor. However, he soon became intrigued by econometrics, switched to Nuffield, and you know the rest. Marty was always a super academic. I wasn't and moved first to the Federal Reserve and then into commercial banking. We remained friends over the years and occasionally met at various conferences usually run by another of Marty's friends , Andrew Crockett of the BIS,
where I ended my career as head of the Banking Department. During all this time I never had the opportunity to meet you, but I always knew who you were through mutual acquaintances. I am so sorry to learn about Marty. I still can't believe it. Please accept my deepest condolences. I wish all of the best for you and your family.
