Alastair Cassels-Brown Obituary

Alastair Kennedy Cassels-Brown, 74, of Little Pond Road, Concord, NH died Friday, November 30, 2001 in his home. He was born in London in 1927. He was educated at All Saints, Margaret Street, where he was a Chorister and at St. John's School, Leatherhead. Alastair was the Organ Scholar at Worcester College, Oxford University, where he earned a B.A. B in Music and M.A. Degrees. He was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. He earned his doctorate in theory and composition at the University of Toronto. Dr. Cassels-Brown's forty year career in the United States included the positions of Director of Music at the St. George's School of Newport, RI, Associate Organist and Choir Director at the Cathedral of St. John the Devine, New York, NY, and Organist and Choirmaster of the Grace Church in Utica, NY. At the Hamilton College in Clinton, NY he taught theory and composition and directed the concert choir. From 1967 until his retirement in 1992 he was Professor of Church Music at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass. For several years, Alastair was also on the faculty and served as Dean of the Evergreen, Colorado Summer Institute of Church Music. He was an active member of the American Guild of Organists. Throughout his career, Dr. Cassels-Brown maintained a busy schedule of organ recitals in the United States and abroad and directed choral and chamber music concerts in the New York and New England area. His numerous compositions include choral and orchestral works, music for organ, a cello concerto, violin sonatas, a song cycle and an opera. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Cassels-Brown of Concord, NH; one son, Peter Cassels-Brown of Vermont; one daughter, Elisabeth Cassels- Brown of Vienna, Austria; two brothers; Ian Cassels-Brown and Graham Cassels-Brown, both of England; two grandchildren; Erin and Zoe Cassels- Brown; both of Vermont; nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Bennett Funeral Home, CONCORD, NH is in charge of arrangements.
