CECIL COGGINS Obituary

COGGINS, Cecil "Pete" Doctor, Teacher, Outdoorsman November 22, 1933 – September 19, 2019 Cecil "Pete" Coggins was born in Long Beach, CA. His father was a Navy doctor, and Pete spent his childhood in numerous homes from Oroville, CA to Washington DC, to high school in Tsing Tao, China. He attended Yale ('54) and married Clemency Chase ("CC"), in 1956. In 1957, their first son, Chase, was born. Pete graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1958. After internship in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital he joined the Navy, where he was based with his family in Cyprus and a second son, Daniel, was born in 1960. Pete did his residency in Internal Medicine at the Stanford University Medical Center, and during the family's four years in Palo Alto, a daughter, Christiana, was born. Pete and his family moved to Cambridge in 1965, while he had a fellowship in Nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1968, the family moved to Auburndale, Newton, where they continue to live. He practiced internal medicine and nephrology at Mass General Hospital, then Beacon Hill Practice, and taught at Harvard Medical School from 1965 to 2015. Pete also directed the Health Sciences and Technology course (Harvard/MIT) in renal physiology. In his spare time, Pete loved being outdoors: hiking, camping, sailing, knot-tying, and problem-solving. Pete was predeceased by his father, Cecil Hengy Coggins, his mother, Dorothy Hammond Coggins, and his son, Chase Frederick Coggins. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, son, Daniel Coggins, daughter, Christa Coggins (David Franklin); brothers, John Coggins (Marcia Hadley), and Bill Coggins (Margaret Coggins); grandchildren Speed Franklin (Trevor Donadt), Rachel Franklin (Máté Fischer), and Emily Coggins; and two nieces. A Memorial Gathering will be held at a later date. Gifts in Pete's name can be made to the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.

Dr. Coggins saved my life. No Dr. could ever even slightly compare to the compassion and empathy he showed me during the roughly 20 years I was his patient. I will forever miss and remember him as he was one of the kindest people I´ve ever met.

Dr. Coggins saved my life. His kindness so huge and his heart even larger. He truly cared about me, came to visit me in the hospital and never forgot to ask how my dog Bailey was. He will hold a special place in my heart forever.

I was blessed to share an office with Pete at MGH for 7 years. Not only was he a wonderful, intelligent and mild mannered mentor but, I also considered him a dear friend. One who was honest, supportive and protective. He was and still is an extremely special man. His love, grace, kindness and intelligence still live in spirit and within the hearts of many lives he touched along the way.

Dear Pete and family,
Pete was a warm and quiet presence during my life as a house officer at MGH. I remember vividly his grace and dignity when his son Chase was lost, it will ever be for me an example of how to suffer such a loss while carrying on to care for patients and family. A truly great human and doctor and mentor, he has left the world a better place. gary schoolnik

I had known Dr. Coggins for 22 years, beginning when I was first diagnosed with my kidney disease. He later was my nephrologist and PCP up until he had to retire two years ago. Dr. Coggins was the epitome of compassion. He genuinely cared about not only my health, but my life. He was everything I could have asked for in a physician and I would be hard-pressed to find someone of his caliber again. My deepest sympathies to the Coggins family during this difficult time; sending love and light your way

I agree completely with my classmate, Dr. Freese. There were a lot of brilliant clinicians and great teachers at Harvard Medical School, but very few who were not only academic superstars, but also took such a genuine personal interest in the medical students, and even fewer who had the compassion, humor, common sense, and wisdom that Dr Coggins had. Unfortunately I lost touch with him after medical school, other than occasionally running into him in a hallway at MGH, but he lives on in my memory as a true inspiration.

Dr Coggins was one of the kindest and most caring faculty members in HST at Harvard and MIT. There were many tough personalities in the HST faculty at Harvard Medical School but Dr Coggins was one of the exceptions. He brought a tremendous humanity and warmth to his interactions with medical students, including me. He served as a model for me as I climbed the ranks of medical academia and instructed hundreds of medical students, residents and fellows. I learned a lot of physiology and pathophysiology from him but most importantly I learned how to be supportive and encouraging to each student with whom I had an interaction. I am saddened by his passing, but grateful for his long and productive life. I hope his children and wife can read this and have tremendous pride in this wonderful man! With warm regards, Andrew Freese, MD, [email protected]

Dr. Coggins will be forever missed. He was kind, patient, professional, and caring. He literally saved my life. He discovered that I had something going on with my heart at age 26 even though I had no symptoms. This led to successful open heart surgery at MGH and this led to my ability to now have a healthy 6 year old daughter Jasmine. Dr. Coggins was there every step of the way. He helped me to be brave in the years following the surgery. He wanted me to accept that I was all healed and strong. He encouraged me to be active and to sing every day as he knew it made me happy. I wish I had been able to say goodbye. I send his family all the strength in the world as that is what it will take to endure such a loss.

I think that Pete's decision to pursue nephrology as a specialty was influenced, at least in part, by Roy Maffly, in 1960 a newly minted member of Stanford's faculty, who had just completed training in renal medicine and research (nephrology was not then a common term) at the Mass General (where a medical student named Jamison spent time in the same laboratory as Roy) and UC San Francisco. At Stanford, Roy was regarded as a good teacher from the start, and he mentored Pete Coggins when Pete was a resident. Since then they became lifelong friends. I met Pete through Roy and Pete and I became friends. He was a very good doctor, nephrologist and person.

Just got this news and feeling so sad, nostalgic and grateful. Rest in peace, dear Dr. Coggins. My primary care physician through college, my 20s and until just a couple of years ago. The best, most compassionate, caring doctor I ever had. He would call me, he visited me in the hospital, he would email me back lightning fast, he would make me smile, he helped me through some of my darkest days, and most importantly, he made me feel safe. I will miss you terribly as I already have these last few years. ❤
