GEORGE WHITEHOUSE Obituary

WHITEHOUSE, Rev. George Minister-at-Large at Arlington Street Church Chestnut Hill, MA, the Rev. George G. Whitehouse, formerly of Cambridge, a Unitarian Universalist minister, whose career spanned more than six decades at Arlington Street Church in Boston, died on August 16, 2025, after a period of declining health. He was 87. Born September 23, 1937, in Boston, George grew up attending Arlington Street Church, where he was later ordained. He graduated from Northeastern University and attended Harvard Divinity School. In 1961, he restored the church's historic steeple bells, and thereafter, as resident campanologist, rang them for services and community celebrations, including Boston Pride and Red Sox opening days. His ministry championed war resistance, juvenile justice reform, and social outreach programs for women, children and families. He mentored new ministers, served as treasurer, sang in the choir, gave attentive pastoral care, and officiated at innumerable weddings and memorials. He helped found Interfaith Young Adult Ministries, Back Bay, a multi-service center offering innovative shelter for children. He served on boards including UU Urban Ministry, UU Women's Heritage Society, and Bethany Union for Young Women. He was also an Air Force Reservist. Always up for adventure, George was an avid outdoorsman. He and his wife, Gaby (Dundon), traveled widely, ran Custom African Travel Services, and explored dozens of countries over their 50 years together. In addition to Gaby, he leaves their children and spouses, the late Jennifer (Dundon) and Ann Duvall, John Dundon and fiancée, Julia Huston, Brian Whitehouse and Judy Gooen, Keith and Rachel Whitehouse, Dean Whitehouse; and nine grandchildren, Ben and Olivia Duvall, Rebecca Dundon, and April, Bonnie, Emilie, Jesseny, Josh and Mel Whitehouse. He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Whitehouse, of Plymouth; and Janet (McDuff) Whitehouse, the mother of his three sons. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., on September 21, 2025, at Arlington Street Church, 20 Arlington St., with a reception in the parish hall to follow. Donations to the "George Whitehouse Fund" at ASC will support the church and its bells.
