As her former sister-in-law, I offer my deepest condolences to Jane's family and friends. She was always kind to me personally and encouraging to me in my vocation and avocation.

I am so sad to hear of Jane's passing. I worked with her to make her Sterling dataset available in Harvard's repository and during the past 1.5 years of this pandemic, I would check on her to make sure she was healthy and well and only today did my emails for her not work. I was saddened to find passed.
May you rest in peace, Jane. You will be missed.

I am saddened on a personal and professional level to just learn of Dr Murphy’s passing. I first met her as a master’s and doctoral student in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health in 1969. She was passionate about her work, eager to explain it, examine it, continually improve it, and make it useful in practical ways to help people and communities. We had no contact for many years until we reconnected about 10 year ago. On trips back to Boston from Denver, we met and had some wonderful lunches together, including with my wife, and continued interesting professional and personal conversations. My professor, Dr. Murphy became Jane, and the time we spent together was special, and will continue to be meaningful to me as time goes on. She was exceptional in many ways, and I feel honored to have known, studied, and connected with her. All my best to her family, of which she was very proud and spoke so very highly of.

We are so sad to hear of Jane's passing. She was a wonderful lady and she and Alec had some interesting times paddling with us at Hinterland Adventures and also at their cabin, Swimming Deer. We have good memories from both places that come up more than she or Alec would have thought. Our condolences to Jane's family. Ann and Hantford Lewis

I have known Jane and Alec since I took their courses at Harvard School of Public Health in the early 1970's. That year impressed me with the value of their longitudinal perspective and their methods and studies (e.g., Stirling County studies) which they created. As a result, I have been engaged in longitudinal research studies ever since. But our paths crossed in other ways, as we both have cottages about 2 miles apart in Nova Scotia in a small community where everybody knows everybody (or at least knows their business!). So we caught up as friends from time to time in the summers, as well as at research society meetings during the year. Jane, I will miss your intellect, breadth of understanding, and devotion to understanding the health of populations. If heaven has a research component, I hope the team appreciates your joining them. Requiescat in pacem.

Jane made psychiatric epidemiology come alive for me as a student. I remember her passion for the field, and her insistence on work only of the highest quality. It's been nearly 30 years, but I still have the final paper for the class and her thoughtful cover letter. I remain honored to have spent time learning with Dr. Murphy.

Meeting Jane was a most memorable moment in my life. Being mentored by her was a privilege that cannot be deserved by any and knowing her opened the door to a lifelong process of learning and change.
Jane's humble approach to science and life dissolved all complexities and impurities, to make you see things sharply and clearly. She mentored me as a whole person, embraced me not just as a student but as a human being, a women, and a parent.
The grand Jane was an inspiration for progress who proved herself as a woman scientist in a male dominated field. She was a pioneer in the critical disciplines of psychiatry and epidemiology and inspired us all with her limitless productivity, teachings, and kindness.
Thank you Jane. You will be missed dearly.

Jane was a long time customer at O'regan's Toyota Dartmouth.
The entire service team was very sad to hear of her passing. She was ala welcome visitor and all staff enjoyed having conversations with her when she visited us. We very much enjoyed her spirt and energy. We will miss her visits.

Jane was so smart and always so kind.
As gracious as any we might ever find.
Always supportive.
Never divisive.
She taught us to stop, to relax, and unwind.
Missing her.
Goodcheer in trying times (Herodotus: )
