John McGinty Obituary

McGINTY, John Edward September 24, 1946-October 14, 2011. A senior advisor in the investment banking department of UBS, died at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA on Friday, October 14 of complications of multiple myeloma. He was 65 years old. Born in St. Louis and educated at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, McGinty began his career in 1970 at the boutique New York City investment firm of H. C. Wainwright, training with John Suydam as a machinery analyst in a revered research department. Wainwright was acquired by Weeden & Co. and in 1977, when the company closed its doors, McGinty moved to First Boston in the same role. He continued as a managing director when First Boston was acquired by Credit Suisse, providing coverage based on, in some cases, relationships that extended over three decades. Ranked by Institutional Investor magazine among the top machinery analysts in 31 of his 33 years in the industry (occasionally in more than one category), McGinty became the centerpiece of the firm's global effort in machinery. He was a voice of enthusiasm in the research department and a willing mentor to younger analysts, an uncommon trait on Wall Street. He retired from Credit Suisse in November 2006 and moved to UBS as a senior advisor in investment banking. A strong believer in education, McGinty served as a trustee to Salve Regina University, was an active alumnus of Chicago Booth, and contributed to initiatives at Milton Academy, the Rivers School, the investment committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, Goddard House in Brookline MA, and Trinity Church, Boston. He also established the first girls town soccer league in Montclair, NJ. An avid golfer and devoted family member, he is survived by five sisters, his wife of 40 years, Sarah Myers, and three children, John, Sarah, and William, all of Boston MA. Funeral service and reception will be held at Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston at 10am on October 22. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the John E. McGinty history chair at Salve Regina University, c/o the Office of the President, 100 Ochre Point Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.

John was a great source of encouragement when I joined First Boston 20 years ago and began the transition from newspaper reporter to analyst. He was a great mentor and storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor about Wall Street. He will be missed.

We will miss our periodic visits with John and family members in his whirlwind tour of Florida baseball spring training games and playing golf. One of the nicest, brightest and most engaging people I have known. A true loss to my whole family.
