Veronica Ravnikar Obituary

RAVNIKAR, Veronica Antoinette, MD 61, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at her home in Cohasset on July 15. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Leonard Sicilian, MD of Cohasset; her three children, Gregory C. Sicilian of Atlanta, GA, David J. Sicilian of Boston, MA, and Victoria E. Sicilian of Hoboken, NJ; and her siblings Maria, Lydia and John, of Long Island, NY. Dr. Ravnikar was born on January 13, 1950 in Brooklyn, NY to John and Frances Ravnikar, then recent immigrants to the U.S. from what is now Slovenia. She received an AB, magna cum laude, from Immaculata College (PA) and received an MD from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in 1975. She continued her medical training in Chicago, completing her residency in OB/GYN at Prentice Women's Hospital of Northwestern University. She then completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Boston Hospital for Women and Harvard Medical School. Throughout her career, Dr. Ravnikar dedicated herself to her patients, teaching and research. Among her many hospital and academic appointments, she was most recently the Chair of the OB/GYN Department at South Shore Hospital and Associate Clinical Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard. She received numerous awards for her contributions to her field, and had recently been accepted to Brigham and Women's Leadership Program. In 2010, she received the William Heath Byford Award from Northwestern, which recognizes outstanding alumni in OB/GYN. She dedicated this honor to her husband and children. A funeral service was held in Manhattan on July 21. A memorial service will be held at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston at a later date. Back in June 1992 I was a scared childless female who had just moved to Boston after losing my father. I had a HUGE uterine fibroid and after a miscarriage, Dr Ravnikar performed a myomectomy/laparotomy at Mass General. It was a success!! I am now a 60 year old woman with 4 daughters and one of them is a nurse who wants to get into maternal-fetal medicine. To say Dr Ravnikar was a Dr who acted more like a Nurse in a caring way would be an understatement! She was brilliant and empathetic, and when someone like that comes into your life, you do not forget them. I´m so sorry I did not know before this that she had passed because I now live in NC. I looked her up and I am devastated. I want to give my condolences to her family and all who loved her.

It is difficult for me to believe that we have all endured a dozen years without Veronica in our lives. I always enjoyed learning and working with her a a Reproductive Endocrine Fellow as well as being appointed an Associate in the Practice. She touched so many lives with her compassion, understanding and focus towards doing her best in all areas of her life. She was a good friend and Mentor and she enriched my life as she has with so many other colleagues, patients, family and friends. I look back on those days of working with her as a treasured time in my professional life. You are loved and missed Veronica!

I am very late in sending my condolences, but after just finding out about her death I need to express my feelings. I have twins, who are now 29, because of Dr. Ravnikar. I suffered and was hospitalized after their conception and Dr. Ravnikar helped me so much while I was hospitalized. She acted like a nurse, not caring or thinking about being an MD. She could easily have asked the nurse to tend to me and walked away, but she chose to stay. I know a man Dr. would have walked away. She made me feel whole and not like a crazy woman wanting desperately to have a child. Because...that’s not a crazy desire. I’m so sad that she is gone. She was truly an exceptional doctor. My life is better and happier because of Dr. Ravnikar.

Dr. Veronica Ravnikar you will never be forgotten. You maybe gone from us for now, but live on in our hearts. We shall meet again one day, until then peace be with you and keep watching over us.

Sincerely,
Your former patient.

I had the privilege of working with Veronica at Brigham and Women's Fertility & Endocrine Unit the Summer of 1981. She was a wonderful colleague with whom I worked with patient care and research. I was heartbroken when I learned of her passing from Isaac Schiff, MD. I pray that her family is doing well in spite of their loss!! She was a real gem with compassion, kindness & dedication. I learned so much from her, Isaac, Paul Zarutskie, MD and the other Reproductive Endocrine Fellows. I still can't believe that she is gone. I miss her as I am sure of her family does! Rest in peace, Veronica! I loved you as a person & a professional!

We were told we would never had children. I said not until Boston Hospital says so. My oldest will be 25 next month and I was thinking of Dr Ravnikar and how brilliant she is. Thank you.

March 14, 2016

I would not have my wonderful daughter Lauryn if it wasn't for Dr. Ravinakar,
she was the kindest, most sincere Dr. I
have ever met. She took me on as a patient
by a referral from a friend, I had tried for 2 1/2 yrs to become pregnant, after seeing this wonderful Dr. and person, I was
pregnant within 3 months. I will always be
so very grateful to her, and deeply saddened to find out of her passing by trying
to refer a friend also in need of a fertility specialist. My prayers go out
to her loving family and friends. See is angel.

I worked with Veronica when she was a Reproductive Endocrine Fellow under Isaac Schiff, MD at then Boston Hospital for Women. Her research on hot flashes,Menopause, and bone densities in addition to her infertility work were fascinating to me. She actually had me participate in some of her research. She was warm & compassionate with her patients. Teaching was one of her strengths with colleagues & patients alike. I was stunned when Isaac recently told me of her passing. I had always hoped that we would get to work together again. I am truly saddened to learn of her passing. I extend my condolences to Lenny, Gregory, David & Victoria.
Sincerely,

I recently went to my apt with Dr Ravnikar and was shocked and in tears to learn of her passing. I've never had a doctor as caring, warm, ready to do whatever it took to make me feel better, and such a wonderful listener! My condolences to her patients, family, & friends. You all made her what she was. I am so blessed to have had her in my life.

Although I've not remained in contact with her, reading her accomplishments makes me proud to have been her classmate at Upstate. They are not surprising given the intellect, dedication and compassion that was her nature. My condolences to Lenny and her entire family.

I am very sorry to hear about Dr. Ravnikar's passing. I came from Slovenia as a medical student where her family is originally from. I spend a month with her at UMMC. She was kind, inspirational and just a wonderful role model. I have not known anyone and she invited me for a lunch with her family in Newton. Despite being late because I got lost on road, she made me feel welcome.
She left a permanent impression on me and after many years I still remember her as an outstanding physician and person.
My deepest sympathy to her family.

Ronnie was my classmate at Saint Michael's High School in Brooklyn, New York. She was brilliant then, yet, always humble. She was a loving and caring person. As I read the comments written by her patients, I knew that she used her intelligence most wisely and her professional accomplishments are a testament to her kindness and caring nature. I had hoped to see her at our high school reunion on April 29, 2012. I shall have to wait to see her again in the great by-and-by. My thoughts and prayers are with her husband, her children and her siblings. She and her sisters were very close indeed. God bless you, Ronnie. I'll be sure your presence is known to the Michaelites I see in April. "Please watch over us always wherever we roam." (from our school's anthem.)

Surfed the internet today to find the woman who saved my life and got a big kick in the gut when the word "obituary" showed up after her name. Doesn't seem like I can blame cancer or any other horrible disease. It seems like it was just her time albeit an early one. It's amazing what powerful and wrenching emotions can come welling up like a freight train when you find out you "lost" someone from your life who really wasn't even yours to lose in the traditional sense - not family, not a close friend, not a work associate or fellow parishioner. But how do you not grieve and ache when that person is the person who crossed your life to safe it, regardless of how long or short they were in it? Tears of sadness today for Dr. Veronica Ravnikar, my angel here on earth who found the cancer trying to hide away in my ovary. Without her, I would have been there first to welcome her to where she is now. My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to her family. Thank you for sharing this incredible woman with all of us. With peace, respect and love, Natasha Wieschenberg

I was a medical school classmate of Veronica's (and Lenny's), and had not seen her since we graduated in 1975. I am so sad to hear of her passing--and in reading the other entries--those of grateful patients--I can see her life turned out to be the success (no doubt laced with beauty and humility) I would have imagined, and wished for her.
Sincerest condolences to you, Lenny, and to your children. My heart goes out to you on this incalculable loss.

Veronica was a wonderful mentor to me, from the time I was a second year medical student at Harvard in 1985. She was definitely a positive influence on my decision to become a reproductive endocrinologist. She kept in touch with me over all of these years. I will definitely miss her, but feel very fortunate to have known her.

Dr. Ravnikar was very understanding and intelligent.....always a friendly, comfortable rapport in times of concern. Simply returning a call personally made patients feel special. While extraordinary as a Doctor, she was also a great Humanitarian. Many thanks and
