My heartfelt sympathy to Walter's family.
I didn't really know Walter, except when our family (my father was also named Karl) would visit in Connecticut. I was the younger punk kid, but I do remember (I think) him showing me a radio he built.
We had the occasional email correspondence the last four years or so. In fact, I didn't get a response to an email I sent three weeks ago concerning the fact that a pro shop in Clifton Park, NY, where I was buying my wife a driver for her birthday, heard of Wally Roenick. Hoping for nothing bad, but nonetheless, I did an internet search today at dinner and found out the sad news.
The last time I saw Walter was at a family reunion hosted by our older cousin Richard. I remember that Walter had bought a van to ferry the kids to faraway hockey games.
He invited my wife and I to play at the golf club, and now I'm sorry we never found the time.
Sincerely,
Karl

Wally hosted a Golf tournament for The Campus School at Boston College at Pembroke CC....He was an absolute pleasure to be around. Made our whole group feel like family. A great story-teller and host, he helped us raise tens of thousands of dollars for our program that supports children with special needs. Although I only knew him briefly, he made a lasting impression. So sorry for his passing. -Sean

On behalf of the Friends of South Shore Health, we are so very sorry to hear of Wally's passing. We met Wally five years ago and have been the beneficiaries of his generosity ever since then in holding an anual fundraiser at PCC for our Home Care/Hospice division. Enjoyed the after-event chats very much with him and Jo. God bless and comfort you Jo and family.

I met Wally and the Roenick family at the beginning of the 1982-83 hockey season in the Washington, D.C. area as I was a new assistant coach for Jeremy's Pee-Wee AAA team. Oh boy, it did not take long for Wally and me to click. While Jeremy and Wally were only with my team for one year, it became a life long friendship that spans 39 years. There are few people in this life that you will ever meet that had more energy, better stories or knew more about ice hockey. After that lone season with me in D.C. Wally and I stayed in touch as I finished up college and joined the Department of Justice and was transferred to Chicago. Well as the "Hockey Gods" would see to it, Jeremy was drafted to Chicago and I was lucky enough to go to a TON of games with Wally during 1989-93. We would do our "pre-game" at Harry Careys where I loved watching him "hold Court" with the local Black Hawks fans while we ate a quick meal before going to the Chicago stadium.
To tell you all about the character of both Wally and Jo, they both got in the car and drove 2 hours one way to come the New England Sports Complex to watch my 16 year old son play in a show case last year. We then went for a meal and must tell you, it was SPECIAL to and my boy that Wally and Jo came out to see us. Wally was a mentor, friend and an amazingly compassionate man, he was truly one of a kind!!
Wally may you rest in eternal peace, I love you and will miss you.

I met Wally & Jo 20 years ago through boating and and discovered our common passion for hockey & boating and we have been friends ever since. He was such a wonderful guy. When my kids were younger we would meet him in at the garden for Bruins games & dinner they loved seeing him and talking hockey . We would talk every few month's or more just catch up about boating and running the golf club. It seems like yesterday, but back in 2014 my youngest son was in the 82nd Airborne and on deployment in Afghanistan during the Bruins playoffs and he asked Jeremy to give him a shout out on on NBC, which Jeremy did. Something we will never ever forget. My kids are both married and watch video to this day. Meeting him for dinner in Florida when we were both down there, I could go on for ever. Thank you Wally for been such a good friend . I will truly, truly miss you. Love you. Carl Bettano
