Lynn,Nicole+Family, Gail and I are still shocked over the sad news of Steve's Passing. We can't forget the 1st time we met him. We were friends instantly and he sent us a box of Cape Cod Chips! Later, Lynn he was so proud of the Late July crackers you created, he sent many boxes of those also. We played many rounds together, and I will always remember his little smile, True Love for Family and the Pride he showed - when talking of his Family. We miss him terribly. May God Bless!

My deepest sympathies to Lynne,Nicole and the rest of the family. I will never forget the summer after high school when I was a potato chip cook at the new plant in Hyannis. It was a hysterically interesting summer for a new high school grad! Noddie & Phyllis & LJ & Steve were some of the most accessible, friendly truly decent front office people I ever met even to this day. In the summer of '85 Anheuser Busch just took over and there were all kinds of glitches with the new plant; for example the ventilation system didn't work right yet and subsequently steam would leave us cooks swimming in a Chatham-worthy fog. Yet there was a true spirit of genuine excitement in everyone there because we were some small part of the huge success story Steve had made. As Cape Codders, it was hard to believe that this - potato chips of all things - had given us an identity in the country beyond. And we were making them. In a very real way it made us dream of things impossible too. There are not enough people like Steve in the world who dream big, try big and succeed big while at the same time having soul in their success. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers - and that of my entire family - are with all of you. Slainte'

Dear Lynn, Nicole and all family,
My deepest condolences. Please know you are in my prayers.

I wish he weren't gone.

I was only half listening this morning to ABC This Week, the Sunday morning news show, as names and pictures of those who had passed away recently appeared. I realized that your loved one Steve Bernard was the man I had sat next to on a plane about fifteen years ago. I never learned his name then but always remembered the man and the wonderful story of how he created Cape Cod Potato Chips. I can't remember where the flight was going but I'll always remember what a delightful person he was. Reading about him today I see he was much loved by a wonderful family. My heart goes to you with deepest sympathy.

I was shocked and sad when I saw the news...I worked for Steve for over 3 years for Chatham Village Croutons in California. I got up and went to work everyday because of Steve's spirit. How many people can say that about their boss. I went back to MA one time. Steve and Lynn took me and a co-worker out to dinner...we stayed at their home...
He was the best man I ever worked for. The internet started when I worked for Chatham Village my email address is croutonldy@.... so he will always be with me. God Bless you Steve. My condolences to Lynn and the family.

I was with Steve (Barney), Tuna, Stubbs and Fischer on the trip to run the boat into the dock in South Caicos. What a great time we had. Steve and Tuna shared the forward cabin, with "no-man's land" in between their bunks. Weegie and I went to Steve and Lynn's wedding. That was the longest wedding in history. And I must have had too much to drink or something when I walked right through Steve and Lynn's sliding screen door out to their deck. And then, we moved and just lost touch. For that, Lynn, I am sorry. Weegie and I hope you can accept our most sincere condolences.

To Bernard Family:
As a high school friend, I will always remember the kindness Steve had for everyone. Being a new kid to the area, he made sure that I felt welcome in the new setting. It is obvious that he carried that same kindness out into the world after I left the area in June 1965. I know you all are proud of his accomplishments. They were significant and worthy of his character. I wish that I had the opportunity to have stayed in the area and stayed in touch -- definitely my loss.
My heart goes out to all of you. If I can be of any help don't hesitate to call on me.
I will always remember my friend Steve.

Dear Bernard Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am the daughter of Helene Bernard Sears. I am a cousin of Steve. Although I have lost touch with your family, I have followed his career. My Uncle Serge was so proud of Steve's accomplishments and often mentioned how he began his business with trips to fairs. When we were East last time, my husband and I visited the Cape Cod Potato Chip company. I had hoped that I could leave a note, call or talk to Steve but by then he had moved to Florida.
What a wonderful life he must have lived and what lives he must have touched!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To my friend,
I shall always cherish our friendship- from the early days in Hyannis to Wareham and back to Hinckley Road. What a wonderful ride!
You made a dream of an Irish Catholic boy come true. You took Patti and me to a Notre Dame Football Game (and Pep Rally) in South Bend. We sat in the front row and that's exactly where you belonged. On that beautiful Saturday afternoon, I heard "Touchdown Jesus" say "Hey Steve, love those Late July Snacks, but count your golf strokes a little closer."
I'll miss my friend,

Dear Bernard Family. Very sorry to hear of your loss, Steve was a great guy. First met Steve when he had a business installing vinyl roofs on cars in the early 70's on Cape Cod , he decided to give up that business when they lowered the speed limit to 55mph & had gotten to many speeding tickets & warnings. Had lost touch with him over the years & very sadened to hear of his passing.

He shall be missed but never forgoten
The Lord is my pilot, I shall not drift.
He lighteth me across the dark waters
and steereth me in the deep channels.
He keepeth my log,
and guideth me by the star of holiness
for his Name?s sake.
Yea, though I sail ?mid the thunders
and tempests of life,
I shall dread no danger.
For thou art with me;
Thy love and Thy care, they shelter me.
Thou preparest a harbor before me
in the home land of eternity;
Thou anointest the waves with oil
and my ship rideth calmly.
Surely sunlight and starlight shall
favor me all the days of my voyaging,
and I will rest in the port of my Lord forever.

To The Bernard Clan; My prayers, thoughts and fond memories are with you all. I met Steve and his roomate, Dave Erikson, on my first day at Cavanaugh Hall, Notre Dame. "Bull", as he liked to be called, was a great friend to all the guys on the first floor and the indomitable will described in the obituary was evident then as it was thoughout his life. No matter how busy he was, he always was there with an offer to help or a smile to raise the spirit. That freshman year, I met Father Hesburgh and Steve Bernard. I count them as two of the most unforgettable people I have ever had the good fortune to know. God be with you all.
