George Whitney Obituary

WHITNEY, George H. Jr. Of Bluffton, SC, formerly of Marion, MA, January 4, 2010, age 82. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George H.Whitney, Sr., Mr. Whitney passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was born and raised in Milton, MA, graduated from Milton Academy, and was a member of the class of 1950 at HarvardCollege. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. One of his greatest loves was sailing on Buzzards Bay. As a member of the Beverly Yacht Club, he raced Yankees, 110s, and other small boats, and in the early 60's he campaigned his own boat Juniperon the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit. He was a regular participant in the Newport to Bermuda Race. An avid golfer, he was president of the Kittansett Club in Marion. Mr. Whitney began his career at White, Weld & Co., moving to a senior management position at Blyth & Co. He spent the majority of his professional life in Boston working in the fields of venture capital and financial counseling. In 1990 he moved to South Carolina where he continued to work as a private investor and venture capitalist. He is survived by his daughter Carol Cudahy, her husband Michael, and their sons Nathaniel and William, of Marion, MA, his daughter Anita Whitney, her husband Jesus Alvarez, and their son Nicolas, of Union City, NJ, and his son George H.Whitney, III, his wife Lisa, and their children George H. Whitney, IV and Elizabeth of Marion, MA. He also leaves his dear friend Alice Richey and her daughter Caroline of Bluffton, SC. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Coalition for Buzzards Bay. Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton, SC is assisting the family with their arrangements. (www.saulsfh.com)
