BALLSTON SPA - John J. Heim, 83, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026. He was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on September 27, 1942, to John Martin Heim and Helen Cole Heim. John earned a B.S. in History/English Education from SUNY Geneseo, M.S. and Ph.D. in Political Economy from SUNY Albany, and an M.P.A. in Public Administration from Harvard University.
John worked for the Rochester School System teaching history, for N.Y.S. as a finance analyst for the governor's office, and as Assistant Executive Director of the Facilities Development Corporation, as Director of Fiscal Budget Research for the N.Y.S. Senate minority party, and as the Commissioner of Administration and Finance for the city of Buffalo. After 55 years of service, he retired and became a Clinical Professor of Economics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, N.Y., and taught there for 15 years. He also was a Visiting Professor of Economics at SUNY Albany. John has published over 20 articles and three books, all of which are focused on macroeconomics. He was also the President of Heim Industries, Inc. which produced and marketed statistical software.
In addition to his work accomplishments, John was a former member of the Civil Air Patrol in his youth and more recently with the Air Base in Scotia. He enjoyed running, reading, watching movies with his wife, and spending time with his family. His love of animals was evident with his pets, especially with his cat, Smokey.
John is survived by wife of 20 years, Susan Heim; children, Sarah (Tommy) Keyes, John B. Heim (Jennifer), Scott Reiners (Ross Peck), Kelly Holzworth (Casey), and Lindsay Salazar (Luke). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jacob, Megan, Ryan, Lauren, Arlo, Emmett and Josie; his brother, Marty Heim (Karen); brother-in-law, John Satalin; and other extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Robert Heim and Walter "Butch" Cole; and his sisters, Kathy Satalin and Helen "Honey" Cole.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Saturday, March 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa.
