Bill was married to Beatriz Aguirre-Kearney and had three children, Marcos Rivas, Sofia Rivas, and Aracelis Kearney-Fontana; seven grandchildren: Miranda Rivas, Alberto Rivas, Samatha Rivas, Ashton Rivas, Eric DeJesus, Paris DeJesus, and Maryh DeJesus; and two great grandchildren, Alexander Rivas and Emersyn Morgan Narcisse. He was born to Thomas F Kearney and Pauline M (Blewitt) Kearney (both deceased) in Scranton, PA and had three siblings, Mary Mattern, Thomas F Kearney, Jr., and Paula Barrett, in-laws Eddie Bittle, Felix Aguirre (deceased), Adilia Diaz, and Idalia Aguirre, and nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Bill cherished family, as well as friendships from the different cities where he had lived. He was known for his sense of humor, although it was never determined if he was good or bad at it.
Bill had a passion for photography and enjoyed biking and basketball as his health pursuits.
Bill graduated from Bishop Hannan High School, the University of Scranton, and State University of New York at Albany. He spent his 46-year career in youth development and juvenile justice services in a wide range of governmental, non-profit and corporate positions including with the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department, Juvenile Justice Services. He authored the book, Equipping Quality Youth Development Professionals, in 2014.
There will be a celebration of Bill’s life at Grace Church in Albuquerque on March 20, 2026, beginning at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to a local organization of your choice that serves the homeless.
