Dr. James J. Mongan M.D.

MONGAN, Dr. James J. Mongan, MD Died peacefully on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 after a long illness. Throughout Jim's life he worked tirelessly to bring quality, affordable health care to all Americans. Widely respected for his professional accomplishments, his family and friends will miss his humor, wisdom and kindness. He was born in San Francisco on April, 10 1942, the son of Audrey and Martin Mongan. Jim was educated at the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford where he earned his MD degree. Jim joined the Public Health Service and then moved to Washington, D.C. There he married his beloved wife Jean Holmes Mongan. Jim worked for the Senate Finance Committee formulating health care legislation before serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary for health policy in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Jim then worked in the Carter White House as Associate Director for Health on the domestic policy staff and Assistant Surgeon General. In 1981 Jim and his family moved to Kansas City, MO. where Jim headed Truman Medical Center and concurrently served as Dean of the UMKC Medical School. In 1996, Jim and Jean moved to Boston where he was President of Massachusetts General Hospital and later President of Partners HealthCare. While serving as Chairman of Boston's Chamber of Commerce, Jim proved instrumental in negotiating passage of Massachusetts' landmark universal health care law. He also played a role in shaping national health care reform through his work with the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Commonwealth Fund. Jim will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Jean, his daughter Sarah, his son John, John's wife Theresa, and grandson James. He will be equally missed by his sister Peggy, brother Tom and his wife Lou, their sons and daughters-in-law, John and Thuy, Mike and Leila, and their daughter Kate. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Chapel at Harvard University on Wednesday, June 1st 2011 at 3:00pm.
