PAUL DeBARYSHE Obituary

DeBARYSHE, Paul Gregory, Ph.D. Passed away on September 15, 2012, from surgical complications, at the age of 78. Greg was an outdoorsman, environmental activist, academic researcher, technologist, entrepreneur, and Navy veteran. He was born in New York City, graduated Stuyvesant High School, earned a BS in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1954, and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964. After spending several years as a staff scientist at Westinghouse & Avco, he co-founded MediSpectra. Greg holds several US patents in the field of optics. At the end of his career, he became a research affiliate in the Department of Biology at MIT where he and his colleagues published numerous papers on therole of telomeres in the development of cancer. Greg loved to share his passion for the outdoors with his friends and family, particularly wilderness backpacking. He is survived by his wife, Louise (Konyk) his brother, B. Delano DeBaryshe of St. Augustine, FL, sister, Evelyn Barish of New York, NY, son, Thomas of St. Augustine, FL, daughter, Barbara DeBaryshe and her husband Russ Benson of Honolulu, HI, son, Stephen and his wife Mary Lou and their son, Parker of Bedford, MA, daughter, Nicole Savageaux and her husband Tim and their children, Cole and Louisa of San Francisco, CA. The family suggests that any contribution made in Greg's memory be made to the Sierra Club, where Greg served as chairman in the 1970's or the charity of their choice.

Greg was a great friend of Leonard and me, sharing with Leonard a passion for science and tinkering, and with me for the White Mountains and hiking. Despite a bad back and diabetes, I was more secure on a hike when he was along. The trails will be lonely without him, but the memories enrich my life.
