JEAN CALLAHAN Obituary

CALLAHAN, Jean N. "Tootsie" Retired Chief, Milton Fire Department entered into eternal rest on September 8, 2016 with his loving family by his side. Mr. Callahan was the beloved and devoted husband of the late Ruth M. (Maloney) Callahan with whom he shared 53 wonderful years of marriage. Born in Boston, Mr. Callahan, was a lifelong Milton resident. He was the loving son of the late Edwin T. and Artelle I. Callahan. Mr. Callahan attended Milton Public Schools, graduating from Milton High School in 1951. Upon his graduation from high school, Mr. Callahan attended Wentworth Institute of Technology and served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard. He worked in the plumbing and carpentry trades before being appointed to the Milton Fire Department in 1961. He proudly served as Lieutenant and Deputy Chief before retiring as Chief in 1989. A hardworking provider for his family, Mr. Callahan also operated a successful window cleaning business for many years . He was a devout Catholic and lifelong parishioner of St. Mary of the Hills Parish where his family celebrated many happy occasions throughout the years. Mr. Callahan continued his service to the Town of Milton after his retirement by working as an election worker for 20 years. In later years, he was a faithful presence in his grandchildrens' everyday lives, happily and proudly attending sports and school events. Mr. Callahan enjoyed books, art, physical fitness training and playing guitar. He was also a talented craftsman. He enjoyed his bi-monthly dinners with a group of longtime Milton friends known as "The Hilltoppers". Most importantly, he enjoyed being in the company of his family of whom he was so proud. Mr. Callahan was a devoted and loving father to his daughters, Jean M. Peterson and her husband Charles F. of Milton and Carol A. McDonough and her husband James M. of Woburn. Cherished and proud grandfather, (affectionately called Bubby by his grandchildren) to Lance Cpl. Sean F. Peterson, USMC and Timothy C. Peterson of Milton and Meredith J. and Olivia R. McDonough of Woburn. Dear brother in law to Joan A. Callahan of Danville, CA. and uncle to three generations of many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Edwin T. Callahan of Danville, CA. The family also extends their gratitude to Lorraine Bruce for her care and compassion during the past year. Mr. Callahan was a late member of Milton Firefighters Union 1116. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday September 15, 2016 in Saint Mary of the Hills Church, Milton at 10:30AM. Visiting hours on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in the Dolan Funeral Home, 460 Granite Avenue, EAST MILTON SQUARE, 5:00PM- 8:00PM. Burial in Milton Cemetery, Milton. Donations in Mr. Callahan's memory may be made to the Milton Firefighters Relief Association. See www.dolanfuneral.com for online condolence and directions.
