GEORGE M. HERLIHY

HERLIHY, George M. 98, of Arlington and Pocasset, MA, passed away on December 18, 2016. Devoted husband to the late Mary (O'Donoghue) Herlihy; loving father of son Mark Herlihy and his wife Ann Kappler of Chevy Chase, Maryland; daughter Eileen Herlihy of Arlington, MA; son Joseph Herlihy and his wife Marianne of Needham, MA; daughter Kerry Sullivan and her husband Peter of Sudbury, MA; and son Richard Herlihy and his wife Monica of Winchester, MA. He was a doting grandfather to nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. George grew up in Brighton and West Roxbury, and graduated from Boston College High School (class of 1936) and the College of the Holy Cross (class of 1940), where he excelled in varsity swimming, intramural ice hockey and debating. In 1947, he graduated from the Boston University School of Law as President of his class, eventually becoming President of the BU Law Alumni Association and recipient of the distinguished alumni "Silver Shingle" award. George was active as a trial attorney in Boston for over forty years, with a practice concentrated in construction law, and represented Walsh Brothers Construction as it General Counsel. George was active in civic affairs in the town of Arlington. He served as a town meeting member and was on the planning board for many years. He taught religious education for St. James parish in Arlington and was the first chair of the Saint James the Parish Council. Relatives and friends invited to attend visiting hours at the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., (Rt.60, adjacent to St. Agnes Church) ARLINGTON on Wednesday from 9am - 11am, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church at 11:30am.
