JOHN NEWTON Obituary

NEWTON, John "Jack" Age 86, of South Natick, MA and Lost Nation, NH died on August 21, 2017 with his family by his side. Jack was born on June 15, 1931 in Hamburg, New York, son of John and Thelma (Hurd) Newton. He graduated in 1953 from Dartmouth College with a BA in Economics and an MBA from Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business in 1954. He served in the US Army from 1955-1957. Always a problem solver, Jack loved finance and was an astute businessman. He spent the first 12 years of his career as a CPA at Arthur Andersen. After which, he worked for 30 years in senior financial management positions with a number of New England based companies including Itek Corporation, Apollo Computer, and Morgan Construction, where he served as Chief Financial Officer. Jack was a man with a kind heart, generous spirit, and varied interests. He remained active at Dartmouth throughout his life, served as treasurer for the Appalachian Mountain Club, and as a life trustee of the Mount Washington Observatory. He was on the advisory board for the Natick Historical Society and a trustee of the Bacon Free Library. Jack was also an avid reader, a collector of mountaineering books, and a member of the Club of Odd Volumes. An adventurer in life who often chose the road less traveled, Jack spent time trekking in Russia and Nepal, hiking the Canadian Rockies, Swiss Alps, and White Mountains, and exploring the back roads and villages of New England, Scotland, and England. With an insatiable curiosity and extensive mountaineering book collection, Jack shared his fountain of knowledge and embraced life as a storyteller, a loving husband and father, and an active community member. Jack is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Anne, and four children: Lynda Hall of Wrentham, MA; Laurie Cogswell of Mansfield, MA; Jonathan Newton of Chagrin Falls, OH; and Sarah Newton of Riverdale, NY. He is also survived by a large extended family including eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, September 18th at the Eliot Church in South Natick, followed by a service later this fall in New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Care Dimensions Hospice Danvers, MA or the Mount Washington Observatory.
