JOSEPH BARTLETT Obituary

BARTLETT, Joseph W. Born on June 14, 1933, in Boston, MA. He was the oldest son of Charles William Bartlett and Barbara Hasting Bartlett. He died in Stamford, CT on March 27, 2019, at the age of 85, and was predeceased by his brothers, Albert "Gus" Bartlett and Samuel B. Bartlett. Joe graduated from Phillips Academy Andover (1951), Harvard College (1955), and Stanford Law School (1960). While at Stanford, he was president of the Stanford Law Review and member of the Order of the Coif. Upon graduation he was a law clerk in the United States Supreme Court for Chief Justice Earl Warren (1960 term). Following his clerkship with Chief Justice Warren, Joe was General Counsel and then Undersecretary in the Department of Commerce under President Lyndon Johnson. On the state level, he served as special counsel to the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and was special counsel to the Boston Redevelopment Authority. Joe was considered one of the leading teachers and practitioners in the field of venture capital. His law practice focused on emerging companies, initial public offerings, corporate restructurings, private equity finance and buyouts. He authored and edited numerous articles and books on the subject, including the Encyclopedia of Private Equity and Venture Capital, and Raising Capital for Dummies. While in private practice, he advised numerous large and small companies on capital raising and M&A, and was notably counsel to Bain Capital and Chemical Ventures. Joe was involved in organizing many private equity funds and co-founded VC Experts.com. An article in the Daily Deal (2000) characterized Joe this way: "If someday a supreme court for venture capital were to be created, Joe Bartlett would be the chief justice." Joe was President of the Boston Bar Association and had an extensive teaching career: Acting Professor of Law, Stanford Law School; Adjunct Professor, New York University School of Law; Instructor in Law at Boston University Law School; Courtesy Professor, Johnson School of Business at Cornell. He served on numerous committees and educational boards which reflected his strong academic and civic interests. Notably, Joe served 30 years on the Board of Trustees of Montefiore Health Systems, serving as chair of the Legal and Compliance committee and was deeply committed to the advancement of Children's Hospital at Montefiore and the Montefiore School Health Programs. Joe grew up in Dedham, MA, and spent his summers in Plymouth. He played rugby, fished the Housatonic river, and played tennis regularly with his family, but his first love was always books and writing. In a letter to his grandchildren he characterized that love as a "lifelong passion for the written word." Joseph Warren Bartlett is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara B. Bartlett, his children by a previous marriage to Apple Parish, Charles W. Bartlett, Susan B. Crater, and Harry P. Bartlett, his stepchildren, Andrew J. Holt, Jr., Hilary H. Ram, and Bradley B. Holt, and his eight grandchildren. Donations may be made in his name to Children's Hospital at Montefiore, Montefiore Health Systems. There will be a Service on Saturday, April 13, at 1pm at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, in New York City.

Joe was a towering figure, the dean of venture capital. I had the privilege of working with him when he was at Morrison & Foerster and Fish & Richardson. A nicer, wittier, more intelligent man could not be found.

What else can I say, Joe was a true friend, mentor, athlete and family man. New York is a smaller place because so many knew him...and a sadder place as we miss his towering presence. Thanks for all, Joe.

Rest in Peace Joe Bartlett...Attorney, professor, mentor, friend, business partner, opposing counsel, luminary in the field of venture capital or just a consummate New England gentlemen. An article in the Daily Deal (2000) characterized Joe this way: "If someday a supreme court for venture capital were to be created, Joe Bartlett would be the chief justice." However you knew Joe, he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family which he loved dearly. God speed my friend. Memorial is Saturday, April 13, at 1pm at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, in New York City. All welcome.

I was very sad to learn about the loss of Professor Bartlett, someone so accomplished and at the same time very humble. He was was always interested in the opinions and questions of students, of which I was one in the late 1980s at NYU. Condolences to the family and the legal community that came to depend on Professor Bartlett for his intelligence and guidance.

My sincere condolences to the entire family.
Joe was an inspiration to me and many others. I think he left everyone who knew him the better for having the good fortune to spend time with him.
Joe you will be greatly missed.

Joe and I were the best of friends during our fifth and sixth grade years at Dexter Public School in Dedham. I have fond memories of his sprawling on the couch of his home on Bridge St. reading non-stop in the Encyclopedia, also of his reading below deck in his Pa's gorgeous John Alden designed schooner, the Gernet Light, finally of his weekly wrestling match with his brother Sam, later a lineman for the Noble and Greenough School and Dartmouth. Finally, finally he used to, during WW II, swap his roast beef sandwiches with me for my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Our paths parted when he attended Roxbury Latin School and later Andover while I attended Nobles. I, like many others, shall miss this very bright gent.

Condolences to the family and everyone he touched. Joe was a rugby teammate while in New York and a "classic" athlete in an amateur world --- great athlete, humble and smart about so many things.
Wonderful role model!!
