ROBERT ARTHUR Obituary

ARTHUR, Robert Alan Beloved architect, craftsman, artist, father, and member of an extended community of family, friends, and colleagues, died on April 24, 2020 at Brigham & Women's Hospital from complications due to congestive heart failure. Robert is survived by his daughter Olivia Falcey of Watertown, MA, brother Mike Arthur of South Bend, IN, and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his sister Pat Jacobs of South Bend, and brother Jeff Arthur of Corvallis, OR. Robert was born January 3, 1955 in South Bend, IN to Mary Jane (nee Kopp) and James W. Arthur. He graduated from University of Michigan with a degree in Architecture and became a registered architect in Michigan in 1980. In 1982, he moved to Boston where he worked for a number of architectural firms and garnered awards for buildings throughout New England. Robert lived a life of curiosity, creativity, and generosity. He was a gifted architectural designer and draftsman, photographer (pinhole and architectural), collector, golfer, gardener, wine enthusiast, and consummate cook. He collected an array of industrial 20th Century objet trouvés for use in his fabrications of furniture and sound systems, and was considered among the top experts on AR speakers in the country. Robert will not only be commemorated for his many talents, passions, and cross-disciplinary knowledge of design, but especially will be remembered as a generous and ardent father and friend whose engaging humor, intelligence, and receptivity was and continues to be deeply felt. A memorial gathering will be planned for late spring/early summer 2021.

I´m not sure what possessed me to open a channel to the status of Mr. Bob Arthur. I´m saddened to learn of his moving off this Earth. He was a gentle soul.

I met Bob on the late `70s. We worked together at The Washtenaw County Planning Commission in the graphics department. Bob must have been on summer employment. It wasn´t an internship. We became friends. He helped me with some work restoring a dumpy house I bought in a historic neighborhood. We enjoyed each other´s quirky humor and observed each other´s slide shows. I recall his symmetry study which still informs my photographs. I admired Bob´s quiet passion for architecture. Envied it even, in a good way.

After he moved to Boston, we talked once or twice but then lost touch. I am happy to read in his obituary that he did good work and had idiosyncratic hobbies.

Bob, if you can hear me, peace be with you.

Bob and I were close friends from kindergarden at Lincoln School in South Bend. We played golf together throughout our lives. I miss my pal, and hope he's hitting fairways and greens in that big golf course in the sky. RIP RAA.
