Rita Corbin Obituary

Rita Maria Linley Ham Corbin 1930-2011 Rita Maria Linley Ham Corbin, 81, died on November 17, 2011 at UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, Mass., after sustaining injuries in a car accident. Rita was born May 21, 1930 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She and her family moved often before settling in New York City, where she attended Cathedral Girls' High School. She rebelled against secretarial training and obtained a scholarship to the Franklin School of Professional Art. She also studied at the Art Students' League under printmaker Harold Sternberg and abstract expressionist painter Hans Hoffman, but she said her best education came from visiting art museums and galleries, exploring the city and drawing the ordinary people she saw. In 1950, Rita became involved in the Catholic Worker movement. The founder, Dorothy Day, with whom she became close friends, immediately set Rita to work illustrating the paper, The Catholic Worker. Rita became a lifelong contributor as one of the three primary Catholic Worker artists, along with Fritz Eichenberg and Ade Bethune. In 1954 she married Martin Joseph Corbin, editor and literary critic. They worked on Liberation magazine with activist Dave Dellinger, and then joined the Catholic Worker farm in Tivoli, New York. Marty was editor of The Catholic Worker paper from 1964 to 1973. The family moved to Canada, where Marty taught English literature at Dawson College in Montreal. Rita and her children eventually settled in Brattleboro, Vermont in the early 1980's, and she has lived in the Brattleboro area off and on ever since. She spent a few years in Worcester, Mass., in the early 1990's and had close ties to Catholic Worker communities in that area as well. Rita loved to travel and felt no need to remain in one place for long. She lived simply with few belongings but for her books, her art and her artists' materials. As an artist, she explored every medium she could and even experimented with computer drawing programs, but she considered her best work to be her drawings of the ordinary, the poor and dispossessed. She also loved being outdoors and drew inspiration from nature. "All life is sacred," she said. Her approach to her art was also her approach to life. Rita accepted everyone she met without judgment. She believed everyone was a child of God and was always willing to help someone in need. She was unfailingly generous and hospitable and never had an unkind word to say about anyone. When an interviewer once asked her, "Do you believe the artist has a social responsibility?" she responded, "Everyone has a social responsibility." Her work has appeared in many well-known religious magazines including Commonweal, Catholic Digest, Liberation, Fellowship, and Catholic Youth Ministry. She worked with publishers such as Paulist Press and illustrated many books including Thomas Merton's Ishi Means Man. She also created an annual Catholic Worker calendar, starting in the late 1960's and which continues to this day. Her artwork has been shown at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, and the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. Her last exhibit, held in Putney, Vt., was in September. She is survived by her children, Dorothy McGuire, Maggie Corbin, Sara Corbin, Coretta Bliss and Martin Corbin, by her grandchildren, Colleen McGuire, Tim Talleur, Chris Billetdeaux, Rose Billetdeaux, and Anne-Marie Bliss, and by four great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, a son Christopher, and three grandchildren, Michael McGuire, Ryan Corbin, and Daniel Bliss. FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of the Word will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 3rd at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 47 Walnut Street, in Brattleboro, Vermont. Dear Family, I am so sorry to hear of Rita's passing and of all the tragedy surrounding the car accident. I knew Rita years ago, when she lived in Tivoli and I remember Dorothy,Maggie, Sara and Martin, Coretta may have been a tiny baby. I loved being around her as she mothered her children, tended to those living at the Farm and listened to everyone with a kind ear and open heart. Some years ago I drove to Brattleboro and we met a coffee shop and reminisced. I was so glad then and glad now to have had one more chance to be in her gentle company. She designed our wedding invitation when I married Al Uhrie who was part of the Glen Gardner community. She was a dear friend to both of us.

To All of Rita's Family - So sorry to hear of Rita's passing and your loss. I knew Rita many years ago at Tivoli. As pointed out to me recently, Rita and Marty were our elders in the movement of the 60's. They were in their 30's and we were in our 20's. Living in community can be difficult but Rita understood it completely and did it with grace. I appreciate having known her. Peace. Jim Wilson, NY

Dear Maggie and family,
Very sorry to hear about your mom...I did have the privilege of meeting her many times back when we had our gigs...She would come and listen to us sing and play, and at the same time she would be busy with one thing or another with her hands...She was kind considerate, and caring, as you are too! My deepest condolences go out to you, and your family!!!
Take care my friend!

Every once in a while you meet somebody whose rare qualities come into focus over time. You realize that they have been there all along--the great person you didn't get the greatness of yet--waiting, enjoying, just there, clear as a bell. Wow!

Maggie, so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I only met her a couple of times, but she was sweet and unassuming, and so talented. Maybe that's where you got it from! My deepest condolences to you and yours in this time. Lynn Lowe
