David A. Wessels

1933 - 2018

INDEPENDENCE – David A. Wessels, 85, of Independence, died Monday, July 9, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.
David was born June 4, 1933 in Petersburg, the son of Ralph B. and Martha K. (Koopman) Wessels. He attended school at St. Francis Catholic Schools Dyersville. He enlisted into the United States Marine Corps on March 11, 1952 and served proudly until March 10, 1955. On Sept. 4, 1954 he married Carol Christoph in Dyersville. After serving in the military he worked with his father tuck-pointing. They later made their home in Independence and David began working for John Deere in 1963. He retired from John Deere in 1991. Carol died Feb. 5, 2012. He later married Christina Meister on Sept. 11, 2014, at the Veterans Park in Independence.
He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
David is survived by his wife Christina Wessels Independence; children: Dawn (Dan Martinson) Wessels, Independence, Julie (Kevin Lange) Wessels, Riverview, Florida, Bruce (Cindy) Wessels Independence, Brian Wessels, Independence, John Wessels, Waterloo, James Wessels, Manchester; step children: Cory (Jill) Wilson, Independence, Emily (Jamell) Topliff, Waterloo; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; his sisters: Doris Wiskus, Colesburg and Nancy Goerdt, Earlville; and a sister-in-law Doris Wessels, Epworth; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Carol Wessels; a brother Phil Wessels; and three grandchildren: Erin Wessels, Emily Webster, and Trent Phillips.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 14, at Reiff Family Center & Funeral Home with Rev. Robert McMurdock officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday July 13, at Reiff Family Center & Funeral Home.
