Matthew Geiger Obituary

Matthew William Geiger

Age: 43 • Alexandria, VA

Matthew William Geiger died on March 9, 2016, in his home in Alexandria, Virginia, surrounded by his parents and loving wife Emily. He had battled cancer for the last two years. Matthew was the son of William Ebling Geiger, Jr. and Edwina ('Winnie') Pordum Geiger. He was born on November 8, 1972 in Carbondale, Il, and moved with his family to Vermont in 1974. He graduated from Rice Memorial High School after receiving his primary education in Essex Junction schools. After one year at SUNY Oswego, Matthew transferred to UVM, where he completed majors in both History and Religion, as well as a minor in Philosophy, in 1997. He lived with Benedictine Monks in Chicago while doing graduate studies at the University of Chicago, from which he received a Master of Divinity in 2004. Following adjunct instructor positions at local colleges, he began his high school teaching career at St. Mark's School in Southborough, MA. He moved in 2007 to St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School (SSSAS) in Alexandria, where he taught courses in religion and ethics up until his death. He continued his studies while doing award-winning teaching at SSSAS and earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in 2013.

Matthew's interest in the greater common good was evident from a young age. While at Rice, he was involved in missionary trips to Selma and to Caracas, Venezuela. He later traveled with teams to Guatemala and El Salvador. These experiences reinforced his growing commitment to service of those in need and inclusion of all in the human family.

Matthew found a confluence of his interests in scholarship and service in high school teaching. In his brief academic career, he made substantive contributions to the teaching practices of high school religion and ethics. He published papers and essays having their origin or foundation in his doctoral work ("Religious Education Person to Person: the Reflective and Relational Practice of 'Notebooking' in an Academic Setting") in major journals, one reviewer characterizing the work as 'groundbreaking'. Matthew's manuscripts recently accepted by Religious Education and by British Journal of Religious Education will be published posthumously. He also organized a number of workshops at national meetings of the Association of Religious Education. Matthew's studies concentrated on the development of personhood in adolescents and on effects of the teacher-student relationship on their woldview. The relationships he formed with his students were a source of great personal meaning. After his illness became known, he received countless cards and visits from former students who recalled specific conversations that they had with Matthew which were important in their paths to personal development. Matthew's commitment to the spiritual lives of young people was his true vocation.

Matthew enjoyed reading, studying, classical music, and going anywhere with Emily. As a young man, Matthew loved playing sports, and was a Little League all-star pitcher and infielder. He was a four-year varsity basketball player at Rice, where he became an accomplished point guard and set a school record for assists. He continued to enjoy playing and watching these sports as an adult, and was a regular attendee at Washington Nationals games. He eventually forgave his father for raising him as a Buffalo Bills fan.

Matthew's greatest good fortune was meeting the math teacher Emily Catherine Repp at SSSAS. Matthew and Emily were married in Alexandria, VA on July 18, 2009 and built a deep relationship based on mutual unconditional love. Emily remained Matthew's greatest strength and source of meaning and spirituality during his illness. Matthew is survived by Emily, by his loving sister Karen Marie Geiger, and by his mother Edwina and father William. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on March 14, 11 AM, at Our Lady of Queen of Peace in Arlington, VA. Matthew has requested that any donations in his name be made to Monastery of the Holy Cross, 3111 S. Aberdeen St., Chicago, IL 60608 or on-line at http://chicagomonk.org/get-involved/.

Matt and I were extremely close friends for sadly a very short time. He and I were instant friends during freshman year at Oswego. We walked to preseason basketball workouts together every day. He lent me his nice clothes to wear to away games. We ate almost every meal together in the dorms. We rode a greyhound bus to Chicago together during spring break to visit my home. He flew to Chicago to visit me that summer to play on a basketball tournament. We lost track of each other when he transferred to UVM, but later reconnected one afternoon in about 1996 at his apartment in Burlington.

I always felt ripped off that my time with him was so short.

I can't think of many friends that admired and loved as much as I loved Matt.

I treasure the million memories I have of him.

I have tried to "find" him electronically many times over the years. Knowing I have lived 30 miles away for the past three years and didn't find a way to connect with him hurts.

Knowing he is with our lord and pain-free comforts me.

Matthew Geiger was a wonderfully beautiful person and an absolute gift as a friend.

My prayers for all who knew him and loved him.

We were blessed to have him in our lives.

I am so sorry to hear the news about Matthew and I wish I could help to ease the pain I know that you are all feeling right now. It somehow seems to go against the natural order to lose a child - I know from watching my parents when my brother passed that it is difficult to bring sense into our understanding and faith. Please know that my prayers are with you and that he will continue to grace the downstairs wall.

PEACE, LOVE AND MATTHEWNESS.

with sadness,
Karen

Bill and Winnie and Karen,
So sorry to read about Matt's death.
The young boy I remember was a quiet, gentle boy who seemed to be a lot like his father. The smiling picture of Matt as an adult in the paper suggests he was a quiet, gentle man.
My prayers are with you.

Matt was a gift from God to all of us. We are better people for having know him. We went to Rice together and Matt was unfailingly kind, always looking out for those who needed a friend. I am grateful for the time we had with him, though incredibly sad it wasn't more. Be at peace Matt and may God bless your family.

Matt was always a thoughtful soul. His positive nature and acceptance of all he encountered was remarkable.

I will forever remember his smile, encouragement and talents as an athlete. His friendship and kindness transcends his tme with us. I know that you go to a better place Matt.

I went to high school with Matt and participated in the trip to Venezuela mentioned in his obituary. Matt was an angel. Handsome, incredibly talented, deeply soulful, infinitely modest and wonderfully kind. This is what I will remember most about Matt Geiger.

Farewell, old friend. You will be missed. We all knew you were intended for a higher purpose. Am praying for your loved ones that they may find peace during this devastating time.

Bill: My daughter, Jennifer Allard Hill, just called to inform Sally and I of Matt's passing. Never did I get the connection between Matt and Rice High School. My son David, Simeon Lewis and Kurt Mayer were good friends of your son. Now that I have gotten to know his father, it's easy to understand why he turned out to be such a wonderful human being . Although I suspect that his outstanding athletic skills might have come from his mother's side of the family.....or a hybrid of both parents.

Our sincere and deepest condolence, Don and Sally Allard

My heart goes out to all of the Geiger family. I was Matthew's babysitter and neighbor when he was 4. Even then, I could tell he was a compassionate, gentle being.....He accomplished so much during his short life and touched many hearts. May the Love of God bring you all peace. Matthew will be watching over you all....Blessings and Love
