Dillon Wallace Obituary

Dillon Wallace

Age: 93 • Burlington

Dillon left us on May 11th at the age of 93. Originally from Beacon, NY he lived many years in VT.

A combat veteran of WWII, Dillon served in Italy. He worked in Beacon for many years as a machinist. Heeding his father's encouragement to stay true to friends, family and "his god", Dillon did all of that and more right to the end. He always showed great concern for the needs of others as well as for vulnerable animals; a fisherman no doubt still remembers the day his stringer full of northern pike got released when a good Samaritan could no longer watch fish suffer on that dock in North Hero, Vt. many years ago. Dillon was a living example of how a layman's eye for detail could change an expert's opinion when he once diagnosed a problem with a horse, having no experience with horses.

A lover of poetry, bluegrass and classic country music, Dillon entertained many by reciting pages of text and lyrics. Living in the shadows of his many successful family members was both a joy and a challenge for him. Dyslexia, the early death of his father, a world war and a commitment to care for his mother kept him at home while many sought fame and fortune.

Dillon is survived by his niece, Amy McKendry-Stokes of Kenmore, Washington, her husband David and their son Daniel; nephew-in-law Ed Wells and wife Susan and family; sister-in-law Geneva Bergeron and husband Walter and family; brother-in-law Raymond and wife Carol; and friend, George Way of Happy Valley, Labrador.

Heartfelt thanks to all staff at the Converse Home for a wonderful 4 years. Your dedication to giving personal care and love to our family member will never be forgotten. Thanks to Rick Dooley, PA and Nurse Julia at TCHC for many years of care. Special thanks to VNA Hospice Nurse, Olivia for guiding Dillon to the end with grace and dignity.

A remembrance will be held at the Converse Home on May 17 at 4:30. All are welcome.

I spoke with Dillon on the telephone in 2003 after returning from a 50-day, 650-mile canoeing expedition through the interior of Labrador. My team retraced the canoeing expedition route attempted by his father Dillon, Leonidas Hubbard and their guide George Elson in 1903, which tragically ended in Hubbard's death. It was truly remarkable to speak with him that day and to tell him that we had walked in his father's footsteps and had become the first people since 1905 to travel through the rugged Labrador interior since 1905. A few days after speaking with Dillon, I was also able to speak with his sister Ann McKendry who was living in Washington State at that time. She and I had a nice conversation. Dillon is now a heavenly guardian angel, still looking out for everyone with the peace, love and understanding I see in the shining eyes and smile in this recent photo. We met Dillon when my mother moved to Converse in 2013, they became great friends; sitting together at meal time, walking outside, enjoying activities and each other's company. Dillon brought joy to our lives and it was a pleasure to know him. Our condolences to Dillon's family and friends. Sheila and Joseph Franz

Dillon's charm and wit will never be forgotten. A true gentleman in every sense. Once he knew my sons name was spelled the same we became fast friends. I hope he is eating the chocolate he loved and dancing with Sandy. I am sure he has shed the walker he used to prefer to carry than use. My thoughts are with you, he will be missed!
