Arthur Hawkes Obituary

Arthur Harry Hawkes, Sr.

Colchester - Arthur Harry Hawkes, Sr., Art, "Sonny", 85, Sergeant First Class US Army, passed away at his Colchester home on August 15, 2018. Art was born in Burlington, September 10, 1932 at the Mary Fletcher Hospital. Art the son of late Richard Hawkes and Constance M. Benoit Hawkes. He married Carolyn Stone on April 18, 1959. Art was looking forward to celebrating his upcoming 60th Anniversary.

Art was proud of his military service that took him traveling throughout the world. With his Field Artillery Battalion he traveled to Western Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, and Belgium. Art was a survey specialist that earned him a National Honor Defense Service medal and an occupational medal in Germany. Patriotism was at the core of his existence- proudly displaying the American flag on his home each day.

He started working at a young age at L. E. Brigham Dairy to help support his parents. He was also employed by Guertin Brothers Milk Company, Brewer Brothers, among other various jobs. The majority of his career was spent working for Lane Press, first on Pine Street then to their new plant in South Burlington. Art worked as a monotype supervisor and within maintenance from 1956 up through his retirement 1994. Art was a hard worker that took pride in not only doing his job, but going above and beyond to help in any capacity he could.

He had lived in numerous VT towns as well as Templeton, MA for many years. In 1958, Art purchased his duplex home on North Avenue so that he had a place for his own family along with his parents. They resided there for many years, starting their family and creating many fond memories. Then in 1977 they built their home on Blakely Rd in Colchester on Carolyn's family land and have lived there ever since.

While raising a family Art enjoyed fishing and camping with the kids. As he went into retirement he took up woodworking, building bird feeders, coat hooks, and desks for the grandchildren. He also took up baking; stocking the cookie jar each week and making birthday cakes for his family.

Art is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn S. Hawkes of Colchester, sons Stephen Hawkes of Colchester, Arthur Jr. and his wife Lori of Burlington and their two children Jennifer and Christopher, daughters; Diane Smith of Pepperell, MA and her children John Jr, Nicholas, Brendan and Anica, and great-grand child, Nicholas Jr. and Sandra Hawkes of Colchester and her daughter Hannah. He was predeceased by his sister Evelyn Johnson in 2006. Art has many nieces and nephews, and extended family of which he cherished.

Services will be Saturday August 18th with visitation at 11 am, followed by a service at 12 pm at the Williston Church of the Nazarene. A time of fellowship and celebration will follow immediately after the service in the Church hall, along with an internment at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Michael's rescue squad.

Arrangements are under the care of LaVIgne Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Condolences may be shared at www.lavignefuneralhome.com.
