I have a painting of Walter's. It was a gift to my grandmother who was one of his students in a YWCA painting class. I love it. It is currently in my livingroom. I have memories of going to the Y with my grandmother to her painting class. She loved her painting class and we enjoyed Walter. She fondly talked about him. His memory lives on. :) Kim Murray My grandmother was Margaret Sager.

This Tuesday, September 30, 2008, it will be one year since my Grandpap Walt passed away. One year since Grandpap Walt joined my dear Grandma Mag, my great Aunt Helen, my dear mother Emma and father Steve in heaven. Our family has experienced so much loss in so little time. I find comfort in knowing that we have so many loved ones in the spirit world - so much good, positive energy on the other side. They are all watching over us. I know that my grandpap, Walt, would want all of us to laugh, love, and live life to the fullest on this day and for the rest of our lives just as he did. My Grandpap Walt is so dearly missed and so dearly loved. Oh, how I wish I could just give him a huge hug. With so much love, Kate

Dear Kate and Regis,
I'm so sorry about your loss. My heart goes out to you and your family.
After reading both of your entries, I felt as if I've always known your grandpap too! I can imagine what a beautiful human being he was. Full of life and love. Kate, you must be a reflection of him. In the time we've been friends, I see those exact qualities that you decribed in him, in you. You are something special and although he's gone, you reflect so many of his quality and have touch so many lives that he's still alive!! He is still here with us, through you!
I will be praying for you and your family. May God bless you and heal your pain as quickly as possible. We love you both!!
Love,
Lydia and family

Dear Kate and Family,
My deepest sympathies go out to you. Kate, I know that your grandpap held a very special place in your heart, and I am sure his memories will continue to fill that place, even though he is physically gone. He was a very talented man, and will continue to touch this world with the artwork he has left behind.

Kate and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Your grandfather sounds like such a wonderful man. His paintings are beautiful and are such a wonderful way to show to all how special he truly was. These are such difficult times, the loss of a family member. Keep up your strength and take care of yourself. Although you just started here at CSU, you are a part of our family. We are here for you.

I was so very sorry to hear of his passing but he is not gone - he will never be gone as long as we cherish and remember him through his art. He will live on through that and always be in the hearts of the people he knew.

Dear Kate and Family of Walter,
I have only recently entered your life as a colleague at Cleveland State. Yet, my relationship with you seems older, more developed than the few months we have known each other. I remember the day I stopped by to visit your office and see all the wonderful artifacts that represent you and your life. You spoke so lovingly and admiringly of your grandfather as you showed me his artwork. I find you to be a warm, open, caring person with great strength and sensitivity. I trust that at least some of that was learned in the presence and through the influence of the man you now commemorate. I would love to have known him. The virtues you attribute to him are some that are my highest values. I'm glad I know him through you, his loving granddaughter. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Fondly, John Bazyk

Walt was an amazing man and a wonderful example of how we all should live our life. He was a remarkable leader, husband, grandfather and a true artist of life. Walt will forever leave an impression on me and the way I live my life. He raised an amazing grandaughter and our children will know of the impact that their great grandfather had on our lives and theirs. Walt, I know that you are in heaven with Mag, Emma and Steve and you are caring for them like you always have. We will miss you!
Love,
Rege

I would just like to share some wonderful personal memories that I have of my Grandpap Gassy, Walter Gasowski- who was also known to many as “Gas”, “Gassy”, Grandma Mag frequently referred to him as “Gashouse” or “Mr. G” . My Grandpap Gassy treated everyone he met with the utmost respect, dignity, and understanding. He uniquely approached everything with an open mind and heart. He was so wise, disciplined, talented, brilliant, extraordinary, funny, gentle, sweet, and he always made me smile and laugh. When I was down and feeling defeated, he would remind me to look in the mirror and ask myself, “Who runs this ship?”
I will always remember playing checkers with him and losing, and playing Trivial Pursuit Junior Edition with Grandma and Grandpap, and Grandma and I cheating. Grandpap Walt loved cookies and poundcake; he challenged himself daily with crossword puzzles; he listened to classical music and watched Murder She Wrote, The Price is Right, Millionaire, Mystery Theater and practically any sporting event on the television, including poker. He cared for orchids and violets. He was so connected to nature and his paintings. His intricate and beautiful works of art illustrate just that.
My grandfather was a beautiful landscaper creating a natural wonderland in his backyard. He fed squirrels and actually invited them into his studio. Grandpap was not only a dedicated, extraordinary, and creative art instructor (in fact, Grandpap once taught a class on doodling) but he was also committed to teaching us all about other cultures, nature, life and the challenges that we will undoubtedly face.
Constantly reminding us all of the power of mind over matter and the need for positive thinking, Walter miraculously overcame so many obstacles in his life. He was a true survivor, a warrior of sorts, a reminder to us all that humans are truly fascinating and resilient beings.
The love of his life, his dear sweetheart, Magdalene, was his partner for life, his sweet soul mate, and his valentine. Grandpap and Grandma Gassy were a team – supporting one another and sharing an extraordinary bond. It is comforting to know that these two unique and beautiful human beings are together once again, enjoying each other’s company, and caring for one another.
I love you so very much, Grandpap. Your amazing artwork surrounds me and comforts me during this difficult time. You are so dear to me. I will miss you so deeply. With all of my love, your granddaughter, Kate
