Mackenzie MAY Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald on Nov. 13, 2015.
MAY, Mackenzie Joshua
May 25, 1992 – November 5, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son and brother, Mackenzie Joshua May on November 5, 2015. At 23, Mackenzie was deeply immersed in pursuing his life's passion-Music. Mackenzie had been enrolled in and nearing completion of his Bachelors in Fine Arts-Music program at the University of Alberta. Mackenzie had that rare gifting that gave him the greatest chance of success-he had a "career" voice. Mackenzie had a big personality, well-suited to a dramatic vocal career. Always smiling and always upbeat, Mackenzie was one of those rare humans who always lifted the spirits of those he met. His interest in music started early in life and blossomed first with his involvement with the Young Canadians, and then Calgary Stetsons Showband. The commaraderie and fun he ultimately enjoyed later as a member of the Calgary Stampede Showband forged the closest friendships of his life. Mackenzie is survived by his parents Rhonda and Bevan; his two siblings Cecilia and Mackinley; his grandparents Clifford and Martha May; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. A private funeral and graveside service is planned in the Okotoks area. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mackenzie May Scholarship Fund at the University of Alberta, c/o Office of Memorial and Tribute Giving, 3-501 10230 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, AB T5J 4P6. Donations are to be made payable to the University of Alberta in memory of Mackenzie May. Gifts may also be made online at www.giving.ualberta.ca/honour. I didn't know Mackenzie for very long -- I just started at the U of A this year -- but we had two classes together. I could see why he was so well liked: bubbly personality, a smile on his face, and a beautiful voice. I wish I had gotten to know him better -- he seems like an amazing young man who made everyone around him better. My deepest condolences to his family and friends; I hope that happy memories of Mackenzie will be of great comfort during this difficult time.
