Roland Hicks Obituary

Roland Monroe Hicks

Corpus Christi, TX

Roland Monroe Hicks was born on June 23, 1957 and went to be with his lord and savior Jesus Christ on Monday, February 5, 2018.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Colon Monroe Hicks, Beulah Porter Hicks and brother, Thomas Ozment.

He is survived by his loving wife, Rosie, sisters: Brenda Landreth, Colleen Kearns, Louise Combs, Flora Patton; brother, Larry Ozment, and nephew, Jeffrey (Becky) Hicks. He is also survived by his children by marriage Larry (Priscilla) Olivarez, Jr., and Tracy (Jesse) Espinoza, grandchildren Larry Olivarez III, Jackson J. Olivarez, and Claire C. Olivarez and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roland was born in Asheboro, North Carolina and was employed as an energy broker with Elect Energy in Corpus Christi. Roland was a Godly man who embodied kindness, respect, and love. He never met a stranger and was always eager to help others; especially those in need.

Though Roland endured many struggles and challenges as a child, his spirit never wavered and was always a man of God; spreading goodwill, love, and acceptance to all he met. Without a doubt, the joy of his life was his wife Rosie, his family & many friends. Roland was an exemplary husband, father, and grandfather to Rosie and his family. He and wife Rosie created a wonderful & happy life together filled with family, children, friends and their home served as the hub for many parties, showers, get together's, and countless impromptu celebrations. They truly created a house of love and he lived to provide peace and happiness to Rosie.

He was heavily involved in supporting his grandson Larry Olivarez, III in his school and sporting events. And in December of 2014, he became a grandfather again with the birth of Jackson & Claire Olivarez; one of the happiest days of his life and his three grandchildren adored their "Grandpa Roland."

Quality time with his family and great friends gave Roland the most joy. He was also passionate about helping others and was an active member in the Kiwanis Club, Westside Business Association, Ready or Not Foundation and the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament. He was an avid sports fan, sports historian, and especially loved the sport of boxing. He volunteered countless hours with young and aspiring athletes pursuing their dreams and scholarship aspirations through boxing serving as a fight judge among many other roles in support of the sweet science here locally. He mentored many children on Corpus Christi's westside and enjoyed seeing others excel. He also had a love of music and his favorite artist, the legendary Johnny Rodriguez. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and will never be forgotten.

The family would like to thank all of the heroic first responders who came to our aid and worked tirelessly in our time of need and especially the CCFD's Mike Hernandez, a dear family friend, for his efforts and compassion during our darkest hours.

Pallbearers will be: Jeffrey Hicks, Jesse Espinoza, III, Larry Olivarez, Jr., Roland Martinez, Roland Martinez, Jr., Rene Martinez, and Jason Dick; with honorary pallbearers Larry Olivarez, III & Jackson J. Olivarez.

A rosary in Roland's honor will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018, at 7:00 pm at the Guardian Funeral Home with a Funeral Mass on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 10:00 am at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church. Roland was a blessing to our life. All of Tracy's girls (Nes, TINA, JEN, Jen S., LAUREN, Aya, JAMIE, and Tammy) loved Roland and his bear hugs. We enjoyed being apart and witnessing his love for our Tracy and mama Rosie. He is truly missed but we definitely have an angel watching over us and protecting us just as he did here on earth.
