I am so sad that Alan has died. It was through our shared love of running that I got to know Alan in the mid-70s. Although we were never close friends, I felt that we enjoyed and valued each other's company.
My strongest memories are of three all-day runs I had with Alan in the Snowy Mountains all those years ago. They were hard efforts - we both finished exhausted - but they were rewarding on many levels.
Alan had an amazing zest for life, and he seemed eternally positive about whatever it was he had going. He was inquisitive about all manner of things. Apart from his formal academic pursuits he seemed to enjoy finding things out and had a very extensive general knowledge.
During the nineties I used Alan as a subject for a study project I was engaged in, reporting on his response to an executive training year he had just completed. I think we both enjoyed the interview process and benefited from it.
Just a few months ago Alan declared himself free of symptoms and positive about his health. I find it hard to accept the reality that he has been taken away so suddenly after such a long and difficult struggle.
I am privileged to have known Alan and know that he will never be forgotten.

It saddens me to read about Alan's death. I worked in his area over many years and more recently would often see him at local shops. He would always smile and say hello - a very pleasant man. I'm sorry for your loss. In sympathy. Chris Moyle
