Penny Lambert Obituary

Penny Lee
Bernstein Lambert
was 65 years old, born March 30th, 1947, in Newark, N.J. She lived in Philadelphia, Wyoming and Florida,
before settling in Canal Fulton, Ohio with her husband, Tom Lambert
(1947-2007), and was a member of Temple Israel (Canton, Ohio). She passed away early on Sunday, July 15, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Grace Ellen Bernstein.
She is survived by her son, Christopher JH Lambert; and by her siblings, Lory Greenbaum and her husband Allen, Lawrence Bernstein, and Mark Bernstein and his wife, Sandra. Penny's family would like to thank all of her friends for their love and support throughout the last several weeks, and also for making Penny's life as happy and fulfilling as it was. Penny's professional involvements allowed her to work with and meet many wonderful people the world over. As an associate professor at Kent State University Stark she taught biology and animal behavior for over 20 years, she was the coordinator of the Herbert W. Hoover Initiative, and she was a longtime member of and coordinator for the Animal Behavior Society and International Society of Anthrozoology. She thought the show, My Name is Earl, was wonderful.
The funeral was held MONDAY, July 16, at Anthony Funeral Homes, Green Chapel (4178 Massillon Road).

Seeing a laughing gull makes me think of Penny. Living in South Florida near the beach, I think of my dear friend often.

I thought of Penny this morning, when I saw gulls swirling over a blueberry field (in NJ). She would have been able to tell me so much about them! What a scientist! What a friend!

For years I kept in touch with Penny, Tom and Chris because Canal Fulton was on our way from New Jersey to Michigan. Arriving at their house was like coming home! We talked and ate pizza. I miss those days!

Still alive in my heart, Penny! Neighbor and close, loving, accepting, dear friend. You brought peace and joy to my heart when these were in short supply. I will always be thankful for your friendship.

I miss Penny! She was so much fun! And she was always thinking about science. One of her fields was Animal Behavior, but she remembered that human beings ARE in fact animals, and sometimes studied HUMAN behavior. She took students to the grocery store and the Atlantic City casinos to observe human behavior. Amazing what she noticed! She observed and studied the interactions between people and their pets. She talked to gulls. She is fondly remembered by friends in New Jersey!

Penny was my first girlfriend in Junior High in Millburn, NJ. I was not the best of boyfriends, yet she was the best of girlfriends. Penny has always, after all these years, been a significant person to me. She was real, honest, smart as a whip, very funny, and always thoughtful. About 10 years ago we struck up an email exchange, catching up on each others lives. My last email was asking how she was doing, about two weeks before her passing. I knew she had cancer and she shared a little about it with me. Yet, in that last email she was asking me how I was doing. I had no idea that her passing was so soon to come. I was shocked, still am shocked, that she is gone. Those memories from over 50 years ago are still significant to me.

My condolences to her family. I know she was so proud of her son, who she always mentioned. She was a good person who I will miss very much.

We truly loved Dr. Bernstein because of her wit, kindness and honesty. We solved many of the world's problems in our local Giant Eagle in Canal Fulton, OH. where we talked oblivious to everyone else. We were truly saddened that we were not in town when we heard of her passing. Please know that if there is anything we can do...don't hesitate to ask. She was simple divine. Shalom...Fran, Herman, Asia, and Autumn Ransom

Im so sad to hear of this news. I will always remember Dr B, as she and I always had some kind of sassy comment for eachother. She inspired me so much and I was always searching for ways to talk to her outside of class because I found her so intriuging. I was always seeking out advice from her due to her great knowledge. She was my favorite prof and had set me on the path that Im now on. She was someone I will always hold dear to my heart. My thoughts go out to whomever knew her. She was a wonderful woman! I will miss her so much.

I first met Penny at a meeting of the Animal Behavior Society, found shared interests in animal communication, and later worked together on analyzing her extensive recordings of seagull vocalizations. I appreciated Penny as a colleague and even more as a friend. I feel very lucky to have seen her just a few weeks before her passing--when as always, she was fun, gracious, and kind. Penny, you will be greatly missed.

Penny was so much fun! She used to turn heads with her uncannily accurate sea gull imitations at Stockton College (New Jersey) in the early 1980s. We went to Phillies games at Veteran's Stadium. Penny loved the Jersey beaches and wetlands. I feel very fortunate to have had such a delightful friend.

I first "met" Penny via a phone call she placed to the payroll department at Kent State where I am a payroll clerk. By the end of the call, I'd looked up her bio and printed it out. THIS was a person I wanted to meet someday. I had that opportunity, fortunately,in November 2010 (probably a year and a half later) at an environmental gathering at the Stark campus. I sought her out and "re-introduced" myself. We chatted like old friends, but then, I think that was just Penny's way. I'm sure you know, family and friends, how very blessed you were to have her. I look forward to the day when she and I "meet" again.

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die. Mary E. Frye

Penny was one of the gems of our Millburn High School class. She was so talented, so funny, so brilliant but so down-to-earth. From the time I met her in 7th grade, I admired her greatly. Her passing is a great loss to her friends, her family, her profession, and to the world that she enriched and brightened.

May her memory be for a blessing-- Treasure

Loved her beyond words-- my little tempest in a teapot.
She was a faithful supportive friend & confidante and one of my greatest sources of inspiration. She was a blessing for animals everywhere as she inspired her students to get out & do something about their welfare. I owe most of my career to this pintful of life & love. Love to you, Christopher--you were her most prized accomplishment and I am honored that she let me share the joy in watching you grow up to become such a lovely & intelligent human. I will miss her every day.

My sympathy to you Chris, I will miss seeing the both of you at her doctors visits. Julie

Penny was a friend and colleague who gave her time and knowledge freely to me many times. Her interest in the human-animal bond was an inspiration to me and got me to study it as well. The world lost a great person, but is a better place because she was here.
