Andrew Hallett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 5, 2009.
LOS ANGELES — Andrew Alcott Hallett, 33, beloved son of Laurel (Wiinikainen) Hallett of Osterville and David Hallett of Myrtle Beach, S.C., passed away from heart failure following a five-year battle against heart disease at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 29, 2009.

Andy was the adored grandson of Gladys Wiinikainen of Hyannis, and the late Olavi Wiinikainen, Alcott "Bucky" Hallett and Jean Hallett of Osterville.

Born Aug. 4, 1975, in Hyannis, Andy was raised in Osterville. Growing up he served as an altar boy at Our Lady of Assumption, and worked at the A&P and Oyster Harbors Marine where he developed his love of boats and all things nautical. He also worked as a personal assistant to Bill Koch and was a manager at Steve & Sue's Par-T-Freeze in Hyannis.

Andy graduated from Barnstable High School in 1993. While there he embarked on his entrepreneurial path by developing "The Hallett Group." In preparation for his future success, he printed hats and pencils emblazoned with his logo and freely distributed them to anyone and everyone. In 1997, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and marketing from Assumption College in Worcester.

Upon graduating from college, Andy moved to Hollywood, Calif., to pursue his lifelong dream of performing. He was a gifted singer, actor and natural comedian! Andy's charisma and talent inspired the role of Lorne. He appeared in more than 70 episodes of the television series, "Angel." The show's producer developed Lorne specifically for Andy to portray. Like Lorne, Andy was the ultimate host — always charming, always entertaining. Andy contributed two songs to the "Angel: Live Fast, Die Never" soundtrack, released in 2005. He became a popular figure at worldwide signing events and science fiction conventions. His popularity took him to Europe, Australia and throughout the United States, where numerous fans embraced him. The outpouring of condolences and love from around the world are all over the internet and very much appreciated.

He joined Patti LaBelle on stage five times, where she lovingly referred to him as "that white boy with soul." He acted in independent films and worked with many talented artists. He performed the National Anthem in major sporting events on both coasts and was featured in many entertainment publications and Web sites.

Despite his rise to fame, he remained a son of Osterville. Many people remember him enthusiastically driving his '65 school bus up and down his long driveway or ringing up their groceries at the A&P. More than one Osterville resident offered their brand new BMW or Mercedes for him to impress his prom dates. There was even a sandwich named for him at the Osterville News Stand. His memory will be treasured by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Andy loved living life to the fullest each and every day.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Our Lady of the Assumption, Wianno Avenue, Osterville. At the request of the family, burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Andy's memory may be made to the Jason A. Fedele Memorial Scholarship Fund, 141 Winding Cove Road, Marstons Mills, MA 02648.

We have so very many fond memories of Andy from our years living in Cotuit, and we are deeply saddened to learn of his passing. We always expected him to show up at our door someday, just like he used to, with a big hug and smile. Every now and then we'd be in touch, but we did not know of his heart condition. The world has lost an amazing soul. We were all blessed to have known Andy, and he will be deeply missed. Our hearts go out to all his family and loved ones. To the Hallett Family:
I was lucky enough to have known your son through school. He called my house for homework once back in Middle School. My mother still refers to him as the polite young man with the pleasant voice. I was excited for him when I saw him on Angel! He was a gifted, kind wonderful man. My thoughts and prayers are with you through this difficult time. With great sympathy,

I met Andy very shortly after moving into the same dorm as he did freshman year at Assumption College. It was largely through Andy that the entire 2nd floor of that dorm became so close. Somewhere there is a tape of most of us tragically singing along to our favorite songs and not suprisingly, Andy was not outdone by anyone. While this group slowly went their separate ways through the following years there, that first year was one of the best in my time at AC as I'm sure others would agree. We all knew Andy was "going places" and from his successful but all-too-short time after college, he certainly did. Rest in peace Andy.

Dear Laurie & Dave, Aunt Gladys & every other loved one of Andy's - My heart and soul ache for you. There are no words I can give you to ease your pain. Too many times we've lost our youngest & brightest. Although I didn't get to see Andy often, I thoroughly enjoyed the times we did spend with him. He was always entertaining & loving. I remember the day we came to see you, Laurie, in the hospital after Andy was born. I believe that was the day we had our big family reunion at Janet's. May God & time help to ease your pain. It seems appropriate that Andy will be laid to rest on the day his grandfather, my dear Uncle Olavi passed. It also happens to be my mom's (Olavi's sister) birthday. God speed, Andy. Until we meet again . . . cousin Cathy & Glenn

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Andy was one of Gods finest creations. He always brought laughter and a smile to everyones face. Andy's rapid climb to fame was a testament to his magnetic personality, open loving soul and the acceptance of the world at large with open arms. Andy gave everything and asked for nothing. A man of the world but still a hometown boy at heart. I will miss you pal. Back that bus up!
