Carol Barrows Arnault

SOUTH YARMOUTH — Carol Barrows Arnault, 85, of South Yarmouth, passed away in the early morning of Dec. 10, 2009, at Eagle Pond Rehabilitation and Living Center in South Dennis, following surgery for a hip fracture sustained in September.

She was born in Brockton on Dec. 11, 1923, and lived her early life in Falmouth where she graduated from Lawrence High School. She spent a year of college in Hyannis and then graduated from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. She received her RN, and worked in the operating room at MGH.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Donald G. Arnault. They lived until recently in Middletown, Conn., where they raised three children: Andrew of South Dennis, Lynne of Syracuse, N.Y., and Raye of Brattleboro, Vt. She has six grandchildren; and is also survived by two sisters, Jean MacDougall of Falmouth and Shirley Thorpe of West Bridgewater.

In addition to raising her family, she served as a member of the board of directors and president of the VNA of Middletown. She was a member of the negotiation committee when the VNA merged with Middlesex Hospital to become Middlesex Hospital Homecare Service. She was also a member of the Monday Club of Wesleyan University, the Friends of the Davison Art Center, and South Congregational Church. She is fondly remembered by her many friends in the Middletown, Wesleyan, and Thirwood Place communities.

A celebration of her life will held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Thirwood Place, 237 North Main St., South Yarmouth. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, in South Congregational Church, 9 Pleasant St., Middletown, Conn. Burial will be private.
