Phyllis Gustafson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2010.
DENNISPORT — Celebrating the life of Phyllis Freeman Gustafson. Every now and then the world is blessed with a person who truly knows how to live. Phyllis lived just such a life.

Phyllis was born on September 22, 1925, the youngest daughter of Helen and Henry Freeman. Henry Freeman was the owner of Freeman's Bakery in Worcester Mass.

Her early childhood was split between their homes in West Palm Beach, Worcester and Maine. Phyllis went to Florida State College for Women and transferred to Clark University in Worcester and was a member of the first woman's class to graduate from Clark in 1946. She later obtained her Master's Degree. Phyllis taught in Chicago, Worcester and West Brookfield. Phyllis developed a reading system in the early 1960s. Later in life she helped her daughter Etta to open Jewelry by Etta. She was a real estate broker and owned Gustafson Real Estate. One of her proudest moments was helping to establish a bike path in Dennis.

Phyllis may be best known for her love of the water. Her famous boat, the Unya Funya, roamed Bass River and Nantucket Sound for many years.

Phyllis raised her children Bruce, Judy, David, Etta, Carl and Debbie. She shared her spirit with many grand- and great-grandchildren.

Phyllis was a member of the Life Long Learning Center, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Cape Cod Art Museum, Cape Cod Symphony and was an avid alumna for Clark University. Remembering Phyllis would take many more pages. Many of them would be filled with funny stories. She was an irrepressible spirit.

Phyllis was a strong minded person who lived her own life to the end. If you knew her she probably helped you at some point in your life. She was incredibly generous. Phyllis would give of her time, her money and her love. She was truly a woman who knew how to live life.

There will be a service on Tuesday, May 18 at 1 p.m. at Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Dr., South Yarmouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Clark University, 950 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01610, for Phyllis Freeman Gustafson.

To the family
I met Phyllis when I visited my sister Ann at Indian Trail on sevral summer vacations. I always enjoyed her sense of humor, her advice and her opinions. She was a kind and generous woman and way ahead of her time. She made the most out of every expreience. I will miss her

Carl and family, We are sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I think she passed on a lot of her qualities to her children and grandchildren. You are all in our thoughts.

Phyllis always enjoyed to play a game of Cribbage too . Nice to be in her company as she was always very upbeat. Miss her with love.
