Charles Staats Obituary

Charles E. Staats, Jr. CHARLESTON - Charles ("Ched") Edgar Staats, Jr., 74, of Charleston, SC died on Friday, March 14th, 2014, at his home on James Island with his wife Mary Ellis Staats and children, Susannah, Amy and Charles Staats, in attendance. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by a sister, Ann Staats Brant of Shelby, NC, and two grandchildren, Olive and Ezra Chesluk-Staats. Ched was born on January 3rd, 1940, in Charleston, WV, to Charles Edgar Staats, Sr., M.D., and Catherine Thornburg Staats. He was an artist and college professor who earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard and an MFA from Boston University. He went on to teach at Thayer Academy in Boston, MA, and at the College of Charleston, The Citadel, and Charleston Southern University in Charleston, SC. Ched is remembered by his family and friends as a thoughtful, gentle man who won numerous awards for his art. Funeral services will be held at Saint James Church on James Island at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014. Interment, Churchyard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Saint James Church at 1872 Camp Road, Charleston, SC 29412 or Low Country Open Land Trust at 43 Wentworth St, Charleston, SC 29401.
