Margaret Chambers Obituary

Margaret Miles Chambers, 92. On February 5, 2010, a comfortable winter day in northern Michigan, Margaret Chambers passed peacefully away. She was surrounded by her family who prayed with her, told family stories and loved her. Born on May 15, 1917 in LaGrange, Illinois to Jean Cossitt Miles and Marshall Gilbert Miles, Margaret Amy joined her brother Marshall (Bud) and sister Mary in the family. They both preceded her in death. In 1942, Marg married William T. Mabin, a submarine sailor, and they spent the first happy months of their marriage in San Diego. Their daughter Nancy Mabin Chambers Kenney (John) was born the following year. On May 3, 1945, Bill's submarine, U.S.S. Lagarto, was lost in the Pacific, and Marg became a widow at 27. Lagarto, missing for 60 years, was found in the Gulf of Thailand in 2005. Margaret Mabin married Frank J. Chambers in 1948. She often said that Hank Chambers "saved her life." They had three children, Catherine Chambers Haskins, Daniel and Thomas Chambers (Margaret); their marriage lasted 45 years until Hank's death in 1993. Margy was active in many community affairs - district coordinator of the American Field Service, president of the St. Cletus Council of Catholic Women, and newsletter writer of the Cossitt Family Association. Franklin D. Cossitt, founder of the Village of LaGrange, was Margaret's great-grandfather. In addition to Margaret's children, she is survived by grandchildren John Kenney, Elizabeth Kenney Augustine (Christopher), and William Kenney (Linsey); Sarah and Margaret Haskins; Meaghan, Sean and Moira Chambers; great-grandchildren Allison and Clint Kenney; nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation Monday, Feb., 15th from 3-9pm at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside. Funeral Mass 10:00am on Tuesday, Feb. 16th, at St. Cletus Church in LaGrange. Interment Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Donations may be made to: Hospice of Michigan, 900 E. Front St., Traverse City, MI 49686. Arrangements handled by Hallowell & James Funeral Home, (708) 352-6500.

I have very warm memories of her from the 50's and 60's when I came to her house to visit her daughter Nancy. She was always very warm and loving
