My husband and I first met Joe during his early days dating my cousin, Carol. They were so like-minded we knew marriage for them was only a matter of time. Neither one of them believed in spending money on utility bills (ironically), so we spent memorable evenings sweating in Carol's apartment in the summer, or freezing along with the water pipes during the winter. Like us, they waited to start a family, and those child-free years of youthful marriage and love and freedom and late nights were one of a kind. The four of us would meet over dinner, talk and laugh, and enjoy that time of life that can only be described as too short. What I loved about Joe was his gifted intellect which produced those idiosyncratic observations of his and that edgy wit. Never dull, never boring. That was Joe. The children began to arrive: Elizabeth, Christina, Alexandra, Stephen, and Alayna. Growing up as an only child, I felt that Joe and Carol's children added to my small bounty. Whenever we could, my husband and I would grab Elizabeth and Stephen for a long weekend and those kids felt as close to us as our own children. Those weekends and other family gatherings are some of the best memories of my life. Joe is gone way too soon. I am angry that the four of us, or the eight of us, will never take that awesome trip together; the four of us will never huddle as we watch our first child marry; the four of us will never marvel over the first grandchild. If you didn't know Joe very well, if you thought he was a little more on the quiet side, know this -- his legacy is embodied in his two children. Lizzy and Stephen are remarkable individuals with intelligence, talent, drive, personality, and so much more that will only grow with time. As we watch them, we will see Joe. My deepest condolences are to my cousin, Carol, who has lost her husband, her soul mate, her best friend. And it is here that words fail me.
