Stephen Horvat Obituary

Stephen P. Horvat, Jr.

of Hilton Head, S.C., passed away at home on May, 19, 2017. Steve was born in Indianapolis, IN on October 29, 1946 and was the only child of Steven P. Horvat, Sr. and Dorothy Berger Horvat.

He graduated in 1969 from Weslyan University in Middletown, Ct. where he played varsity baseball, serving as co-captain his senior year and winning the Walter MacNaughten Award for outstanding baseball achievement. After four years in the Army he went to Northwestern School of Law, graduating with honors in 1973.

Steve began his law career at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. where he was Vice President and Associate General Counsel until 1985. In 1985, he joined the Franklin Life Insurance Company where he served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. In addition to his duties as General Counsel, he served as the Director of Franklin and its affiliate companies. After a brief stint in private practice Steve joined the Sammons Group as Senior Vice President (Legal) for Midland National and North American Co. for Life and Health Insurance where he remained until his retirement.

A dedicated advocate known for his integrity and professionalism, Steve was Chairman and Secretary of The Association of Life Insurance Counsel, serving as its President from 1998-1999. He also served as a board member and Chairman of the New Mexico Life And Health Guaranty Fund. A member of the Illinois and Massachusetts Bars, the American Bar Association and the American Corporate Counsel Association, Steve was also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. In addition to his legal practice, Steve generously donated his time by serving on the boards of several local businesses and school board committees.

Steve enjoyed golfing, reading, the ocean and spending time with his family. He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears and New York Yankees. Most of all, Steve was a warm and loving husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend.

Steve is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathy, his son Andrew of Chicago, and daughter Elizabeth Reber of Oxford, Pa. He was the proud grandfather of Timothy and Madelyn Reber and was anxiously awaiting the birth of his third grandchild.

Steve was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and will be inurned in their columbarium. Per his wishes, there will be no funeral services.

It is with a heavy heart that I read of the passing of Steve. He was that rare combination of keen intelligence, absolute integrity and humility. He was consistent in his abilities to collaborate with others and to define win-win options. He taught not only by instruction but by example. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and admired him immensely. I extend my condolences to Kathy and their family. His contributions were significant to so many.
