Robert Stracks Obituary

Robert J. Stracks, Winnetka, IL. Bob was born in Woodmere, New York, on May 30, 1943, to Harry and Freda Stracks. He graduated from the University of Michigan, where he met his wife, Julie, and received his law degree from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. His legal specialty was securities law with an emphasis on municipal finance, and he retired in January 2020 as Of Counsel to Quarles & Brady LLP.

Golf was Bob's passion and he was a single-digit handicapper his entire adult life. For decades, Bob served as a director of the Chicago District Golf Association. He was one of only a few people to have achieved multiple perfect scores on the United States Golf Association's rules of golf test. He also served as past president of both the Illinois Junior Golf Association and the Illinois Senior Golf Association, and he was a lucky Master's Tournament badge holder, which he attended every year in Augusta, GA.

Bob was a current member of the Board of Governors of the Winnetka Community House, where he lent expertise to various committees for more than 35 years, and he was a loyal supporter of many local and national nonprofit organizations.

Bob loved to travel. He long ago checked off his fiftieth state, and he and Julie traveled to over fifty countries on six continents, including playing golf in Scotland, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

Bob was known for his amazing memory. Everyone relied on him for names, dates, places, and bits of family history-everyone's family history. Many are left to wonder how they will remember dates and events without Bob.

Above all else, Bob was a people person. He made friends and kept friends. The outpouring of love from friends far and near has been extraordinary.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Julie (nee Taxman), his wonderful children, John (Lisa) Stracks and Lesley (Jeremy) Stracks-Mullem, and his adored grandchildren, Anneke and Harrison Stracks and Zeke Mullem. He also is survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margo and Arthur Crafton; by his brother-in-law, Alan Friedlander; and by many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Freda Stracks; by his sister and brother-in-law, Mickey and Danny Spiegel, of New York City; by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Marty Steiner, of Louisville; and by his sister-in-law, Nancy Friedlander, of Florida.

A private graveside service will be held for immediate family only. For information about an online memorial service this Tuesday, please contact Mitzvah Memorial Funerals. In Bob's honor, donations are welcome to The Winnetka Community House, mycommunityhouse.org, 620 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka, IL 60093, and to The Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund, dmsf.org, 309 West Washington, Suite 700, Chicago, IL 60606. Wonderful guy who gave more than he received.

Saddened to hear of the passing of one of the nicest guys you would ever come across. Bob was a fixture at CDGA events of our youth, he was a great rules official and no one knew the rules better than him. But he was even a better person - always had words of encouragement and optimism. We could use more Bob Stracks these days - my best to you Julie, John, and Lesley.

Wonderful man who never met a stranger. Always upbeat and positive in his dealings with everyone. Loved golf and gave readily of his time. Probably the smartest guy I ever met on the rules of golf.
Bob will be greatly missed. Our blessings to the family.

Julie - I'm not sure if we have met, but I just wanted to write to tell you that when Bob and I worked at the same firm in the late 1980's/early 90's, he was truly one of my favorite colleagues. I so enjoyed his sense of humor, along with his brilliant mind. I am so sorry for your loss. I pray that the love of family and friends will sustain you at this difficult time.

Dear Julie, John and Lesley,

Words cannot capture the shock and sadness that went through me when I received got this news a few moments ago! I was blessed to work very closely with Bob for many years when involved with the IJGA and the CDGA. Golf, especially Junior Golf, never had a better friend than Bob Stracks!

I hope that you all are blessed with ALL the the memories that Bob left for you all to cherish. He so loved you all and cared so deeply about his family.

Bob was a very special man and shared his talents and breadth of knowledge with me (both personally and professionally) and with ALL at the Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA).

Our thoughts, prayers and many happy memories of Bob are with you all during this difficult time.

Julie:
I will always remember Bob's words: "The (golf question) answer is in the definitions!" Truly a wonderful person who lived life fully. He will be greatly missed.

I first met Bob in February 1996 at my initial Chicago District Golf Association monthly director meeting. Bob was the Rules Chair and he set the standard for CDGA volunteers both in terms of education, exam preparedness (and scores!), and on course officiating demeanor.

Bob knew many players, always had great stories of actual player situations to share, and he enouraged us to better our rules of golf knowledge and our on course officiating process.

The CDGA and IJGA are both better organisations for Bob's leadership and committment to junior and amateur golf in the state of Illinois. I know that I learned significantly from Bob's tutorage and I am a better rules volunteer for his influence. Thanks for the lessons both on and off the course.

I first knew Bob when i was a jr golfer. I met him at cdga jr tournaments. I played tournaments and at levels, and bon was always there. After becoming a golf professional, I would see Bob occasionally with Julie at golf outings. What a wonderful, smart, stats knowing, outgoing, interesting man. He will be sorely missed!

As one of a very few women CDGA Directors, Bob welcomed my participation with open arms. Such a dedicated and wonderful advocate of golf as I have ever known. He and Julie were always around “the action” in professional tournaments and were responsible for my greatest thrill in USGA volunteering when I drove an NBC cameraman covering the final group at the Merit Club for the US Women’s Open. Bob loved Junior Golf and was so instrumental in getting the AJGA going. He was a lovely man and one that I was privileged to volunteer alonside.

Bob was the first person I met during orientation at Michigan. And he has been a wonderful friend ever since. He has been an important part of my life for 58 years and I will miss him tremendously!

Bob and I go back 58 years and we were roommates our senior year at Michigan living in a home we called “THE PALACE”. I WILL MORE THAN MISS BOB AS HE WAS MY MIND FOR REMEMBERING ALL THE GOOD TIMES WE SHARED TOGETHER WITH OUR WIVES AND OTHERS. BOB WAS TRULY AN EXTRAORDINARY PERSON. THERE IS A VOID IN MY HEART AND MIND. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER BOB AND WAS LUCKY TO HAVE KNOWN HIM FOR SO MANY YEARS DURING WHICH I COULD CALL HIM MY FRIEND.
