Carol, Chris, Jenny and the extended Metz family,
The Mitrani family is saddened for your loss of your partner, father, father-in-law, and Grandfather.
It is with much sorrow in my heart that I speak these words.
I could not be there in person today, because like Bill I have had some setbacks with my lungs; and like Bill was I am on immuno-suppressants and cannot be out and about much.
Bill was my colleague, my friend, my get up and move away from the desk let's take a walk partner, my Don Quixote and I sometimes, his Sancho Panza, my let's work out how to get the job done teammate, my Argonne mentor, and my late-life Father figure. He provided emotional support to my wife Julie and I during the illnesses, and after the losses of our parents and family members.
At Argonne Bill provided top cover for me on numerous occasions, to make sure I didn't do anything stupid or dumb, or broke Argonne's rules. He was a master of the rules and policies at Argonne and shared his knowledge willingly. He was a remarkable man.
I miss those times we spent working, talking, brainstorming, and just being friends. I miss his sage advice, his wit and wisdom, and his ability to keep me from leaping small buildings in a single bound (or maybe it was jumping to conclusions). We laughed, and debated, and discussed, and every time we said goodbye we had a handshake and a hug.
I was saddened to hear of his passing. The only words that I could say was dropping 3 F-bombs. I so wanted to say Hey in person once again. I'm sorry I couldn't.
Bill knew this and knows this I LOVE YOU MAN!

I worked with Bill for many years at Argonne and he was a mentor, a colleague and a friend. Bill, being a veteran, always inquired how my daughter was getting along in the US Coast Guard Academy, we had many engaging discussions. We will be out of town and unable to attend the memorial service, but I send my condolences and sympathies to the Metz family. I will fondly remember my time with Bill, he will be missed.

Im so sorry for your family with the loss of Bill. He was a wonderful thoughtful person. He was Always ready to help a neighbor in any way. He was a great friend to me when Phil was traveling all the time and would help shovel snow or assist in yard work. After we moved, we kept in touch with texts when there was news of a new grand baby or something happened in the neighborhood. I last heard from him in March and he told me about the new baby coming and he was so excited. He loved his family deeply. He was in PT and doing well and ready to get back to a normal life.
I will miss Bill, but I know there is a special place for him in heaven and his kind heart will live on in his children and grandchildren.
We will miss his memorial as we will be on vacation in France, but we will remember to say a prayer in his honor. Again my deepest sympathies to Carol, Chris and Jenny and all the grand children.

So sorry to hear about Bill. And we will miss the Memorial as we will be out of the country. However, on that day we will be at the American Cemetery in Normandy, Fr. I will give Bill a soldier-to-soldier salute while there.

It was my privilege to work with both Bill and his son Chris at Argonne. Bill and I had many fine discussions covering a variety of subjects relating to homeland security and emergency management and he was always a pleasure to work with. He will be missed!

Dear Carol, Chris, and family,
Bill was a warrior. His warrior spirit made it possible for him to confront and endure so many challenges; and thrive as a respected and productive researcher. He was kind and considerate -- a gentleman, a scholar, and a leader.
We will miss him and remember him when we (Argonne retirees) meet for lunch.
Sincerely,
Ron Whitfield

I was so sorry to hear of Bill's death - while not unexpected, given his heroic history, I was nevertheless so saddened.
Bill was a great friend, a wonderful example of what a person could be, and a valuable leader.
He is missed.
