Richard Rivera Obituary

Richard M. Rivera, 57, of Cary, IL, beloved husband, father, friend, mentor and pastry chef extraordinaire, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, to dance with the angels on August 6, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. Richard will be greatly missed by wife Deborah, daughter Flora (Colin), son Gabriel along with countless others. Born in Elgin, Richard graduated from Elgin High School in 1977. Richard studied welding and later fine arts before he found his true North in baking, pastry making and hospitality. In 1989, along with his business partner Deborah, Richard successfully launched Ambrosia Euro-American Patisserie, now located in Barrington, IL. Richard was an artist, gardener and one of the finest pastry chefs. Cooking, baking, appreciating nature and creating beauty were among his passions. His grace, artistry, humble confidence and devotion to his family and Ambrosia staff were all branches of his incredible gifts. Richard leaves a legacy of delicious, beautiful artistic creations, along with a loyal Ambrosia Patisserie community that mourns this tremendous loss. Richard touched the hearts, souls and appetites of an endless amount of friends and customers who experienced his enthusiasm for fine cuisine and hospitality for 27 years at Ambrosia Patisserie. Shocked, sad, he will be miss by the all of us who loved the pastries.

We are so saddened to hear of Richard's death and we wish to extend our very sincere condolences to Deb and his family. In Richard's skilled hands Ambrosia became a landmark in the community and provided us with the best of European pastries, in or out of this continent. Whether birthday cakes or wedding cakes, Yule logs or gingerbread houses, the holidays were always more special with something from Ambrosia. It became clear very quickly that Richard's talent knew no limits. In the first volume of Great Chefs - Great Cities Richard's prominence as a pastry chef was rightly honored, as well as his Chocolate-Rum Truffle Cake. Our family will continue to remember him and his family in our prayers.

Richard was the first Pastry Chef to give me an opportunity to bake. It was 1984 at the Westin O'Hare, & I was a line cook who wanted to bake. All the stumbling in the first few months, and he always backed me up. Now I'm in charge of 50 bakers in 16 Panera Cafes in the south suburbs.
It was a pleasure to be able to meet him again in 2000, in Barrington. Always with a smile, and words of wisdom. He is already missed in my mind. Our prayers to Deb and his children.
