Robert Woods Obituary

Robert Archer Woods II of Evanston, formerly of Winnetka, died peacefully at home October 26, 2015. Born on December 28, 1920 in Princeton, Indiana, Bob grew up in Evanston. He was an Eagle Scout and attended Evanston High School, graduating in 1938. He went on to the University of Rochester on a full scholarship and graduated in 1942. At the university, he played football, ran track, and was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. Bob was a member and treasurer of Delta Upsilon fraternity, Junior Phi Beta Kappa, President of the Student Body, and valedictorian. In addition, he served as a Lifetime Trustee for the University of Rochester. After graduation, he went on to Harvard Business School, but his studies were interrupted by WWII, and he became a Lieutenant in the Navy. After the war, he completed his MBA and graduated with Distinction in 1946. Returning to Chicago, Bob joined the investment firm Stein Roe & Farnham, where he was the 11th partner and remained there his entire career. Bob lived a very full life of family, friends, philanthropic organizations, and as an avid Chicago sports fan. He served on the board of the Juvenile Protective Association for 50 years, being President for two of those years. He was also active in the North Shore United Methodist Church for over five decades. Although a modest man, Bob was gifted intellectually, physically, and musically. He loved to play the piano and ukulele, and had a gift for memorizing songs, limericks, and stories. He was a great friend to many and will be sorely missed. Bob is survived by his wife of 71 years, Ruth Diller Woods, and his children: Barbara Klein (Greg), Katherine Glennon (John), James Woods( Janet). He was predeceased by his son, Robert Archer Woods III. Grandchildren: Bradley Klein ( Ting Xu), Alex Klein ( Megan), Leslie Peterson( Isaac), Diana Klein, Nicholas Glennon , Kimberly Glennon, Caroline Keim (Robert), Allison Glennon, Shane Woods (Deb), Rob Woods ( Christa), Amber Fayerberg (Eugene), Michelle Woods and Julia Woods. Great Grandchildren: Aidan, Maya and Charlotte Klein, Alana Klein, Ashton and Brayden Woods, Nolan and Ethan Woods, Miles and Eliana Fayerberg. His nephew Samuel Elkind and niece Elisabeth Elkind. His younger sister, Charlotte Woods Elkind, predeceased him. A memorial service will be held December 5, 2015 at 4 pm at the North Shore United Methodist Church , Hazel and Greenleaf Avenues, Glencoe, Illinois In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Juvenile Protective Association, http://www.juvenile.org/ 1707 N. Jack and I admired Bob and his wonderful way with
people. He was so active in our Methodist Church and
the Woods family made us want to be members.
