One year ago we lost Drew. It has been a year full of tears, sadness and adjusting to our new roles without him. Taking over Drew's tasks of bringing out the garbage, picking up Brenna's potties, oil changes for the cars, bill paying, and my latest accomplishment, mixing the gas and oil on the snow blower, it started on the second pull! That was the easy part! The hardest task is trying to live without Drew, missing the man who made the kids and me feel so loved. Never could have made it this year without all the love and support from family and friends. Love you all.

To Jeff and the rest of the Xenakis family I extend my deepest sympathy for the loss of such a wonderful person. I met Drew in the mid-80's. He was one of a few people at that time who brought joy back into my life simply by having the great good luck to know him. I ran my first 10K with him! I lost touch with him as time went on and only recently heard the news of his passing. He has clearly made a profound impact on many lives and in that sense, his spirit lives on. I wish you peace in your memories of a genuinely wonderful human being.

A former co-worker at CPS just told me of Drew's passing. It hit me in the gut. He was one of the very few other males in our department of hundreds, a very good guy, who also was hilarious. I had one of the biggest laughs of my life sitting next to him at a city-wide meeting. I'm so sorry to all in his family.

To the Xenakis family, please accept my condolences for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Andy at Consuella B. York Alternative High School for 17 years.
It was always a pleasure to see Andy and talk with him as he was extremely positive, caring, and committed to the students with whom he helped improve their communication skills. Some people live long lives and never make a difference in the lives of others. During Andy's short life, he touched many and each person's life was enriched for having known him.
God Bless the Xenakis family and may you find comfort in knowing that Andy's life had purpose and meaning and his destiny was fulfilled.

Drew was the best speech therapist I ever had the honor to work with at Meadows. He always took the time to stop by and talk with me about things and always asked my opinion on goals, he made me feel like we were a team. Drew saved my life once. It was back in the 70's when we were both lifeguards at Oak Street Beach. I was driving him home after work and cut off a red Cadillac. The Cadillac caught up to me, passed me, near the viaduct on North Avenue west of Cicero. He blocked my entrance under the viaduct with his car and then got out.
The driver was a pimp (yes, dressed just like HuggyBear) and his bodyguard and woman got out of the car. The pimp yelled at me in rage and then pulled a gun. I was frozen with fear as the pimp approached.
Drew yelled at me to put the car in reverse and directed me down a side street. I must have been going about 50 northbound on a southbound one way street. The pimp chased us on foot.
When southbound traffic stopped us, Drew noticed an alley I was too panicked to see. He directed me down the alley and we made our escape.
We did not take North Avenue home from the beach for weeks for fear of running into the pimp again.
Drew saved my life that day and I will never forget it.
My deepest condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Xenakis family. I don't even know where to begin. Andy was such a great person to work with and as Case Manager he always provided me with the support I needed. When he came over to NBJ to service the students he would stop in my office early and we would begin our conversations about the Bears and Bulls. We both would give our predictions for the year.

Extending to your family comfort and peace. Hoping through family and friend support you will find a way to manage as you attempt to heal. Andy was a joy to work with, a true professional, his presence was known at Nancy B and he had a magical way with the students. He had an engaging smile and I can still hear him calling me DOC (though I did not have my doctorate) and the conversations we shared about my Miles and his children. Stay rooted in your faith and though we may not understand, the Creator makes no mistakes. Missing you already Andy!

Xenakis Family,
I have had the privilege to know Andy for thirty years. We both began our careers with CPS at the Juvenile Detention Center in the early eighties. I have continued to know and love Andy throughout the years as we both have worked with students with special needs at the Cook County Jail. I cannot express how much our students looked forward to Andy's visit. I know his caseload was huge, but he made sure he gave each student the great quality of his services. The image that I have in my mind is of one student in the maximum security division, in protective custody, who depended so much on Andy, always asking when he would see Andy. Andy was able to impact so many children's lives. Andy was a special person and I am going to miss him dearly.
