Agostino LoPorto Obituary

Agostino “Gus” LoPorto, 89, of Citrus Springs, FL, entered heaven on April 9, 2009, at Citrus Memorial hospital in Inverness. Gus was born August 12, 1919, in New York City, New York.
He was a loving husband for more than 62 years to Dolores T. LoPorto; and the proud father of Lt. Col. Ron LoPorto and his wife Cynthia, Dolores Lasorsa and her husband Francis “Sam,” and son James LoPorto; and grandfather to Joseph and his wife Laura and Michael Lasorsa. He was predeceased by his grandson Nicholas LoPorto. His surviving siblings are his sisters Marie and Betty and brother Alia.
Gus served with distinction as a Technical Corporal, in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart in addition to numerous awards and decorations. He was a proud member of D.A.V., V.F.W., moose, and the Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776 of the military Order of the Purple Heart.
Gus was a member of the General Building Laborer’s Local Union No. 66, in Melville, NY; the North Babylon, NY, Fire Department; and the past president of the Riverhead, NY, Exempt Fire Department. He was a volunteer in the Head Start Program and donated his time to various community programs. He was a faithful member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Gus, also known as “Auggie,” was an avid debater and always had an opinion to share and usually debated until he had the final word. His heart was bigger than his ego and he gave more than he received. His friendships lasted a life-time and his tales of memories spanned eight decades.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 14, at Roberts Funeral Home in Dunnellon. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will be held at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776 in Lecanto, FL.

Dear Uncle Auggie,
I will always remember the great times we had as kids when we came up to Port Jervis for weekends. Remember all the big breakfasts, cookouts, playing bingo and just going for bike rides through the neighborhood. Sometimes there were so many people up there at one time we use to have to climb over bodies sleeping everywhere on the floor. Good times I will always cherish.
I am so glad that I spoke with you on that Sunday when I called to see how you were feeling. We talked for awhile and the last thing we said to one another was I Love You.
I also feel honored that I was able to be with you when you left us here on earth to go to a better place and be with the Lord. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he put his arms around you and said come to me. I know that you heard me that night, when I asked you who was here you looked at me and went so peacefully. I don't know why God chose me to be with you, but there is a reason. God has a reason for everything. I know in my heart that it was Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Tony, Aunt Rosie and Nick that came to get you. You are now free from pain and suffering.
I bet you are all together now in heaven and having the last word as usual.
Love and Miss you, Until we meet again at the gate.

Love your niece,
Marie (Rie Rie)

Dear Gus,
How we all so enjoyed all our times together, we always laughed, joked and had a such great times.
John Jr always enjoyed being like another grandson to you. You always included him in everything you did with your own grandsons. When I told him about your passing he reminisced all the good times he had with you. You will always be "Grandpa Gus" to him.
You always had a kind word and generous heart helping anyone you could. You will be missed by all, but lucky the people in heaven to have you there with them now! What a wonderful reunion you are having there and I know you are truly enjoying it. I even bet you haven't stopped talking yet!
We were glad to know and love you, and we will truly miss you. Until we all meet again.
Love,Sue, John & Boys

Dear Sammy, Delores, Mike, and Delores, Sr.,
My thoughts are jammed packed with endless memories of how much Gus was a part of my growing up. His care and compassion toward other people gave me a better understanding of what it means to love and help each other...he was always available and willing to help in whatever way he could. And he did this out of sincerity. Such people are gems! And the world is in such need of people like Gus. It makes his leaving us that much more difficult. So, in my own way the best thing I can do to honor his life is to extend myself to helping as many other people as much as I can.
Love and Peace to all,
MaryAnn (Lasorsa) Purtill

Dearest Uncle Auggie,
On April 9, 2009, your journey here on earth was complete and you eternal journey began. It must have been on that day that God needed another "ANGEL" and you were chosen.
I care to "CELEBRATE YOUR LIFE" rather than mourn your passing.
We had a very special relationship and for that I will always be greatful. When my dad passed, I felt you were always there for me.
I will miss our phone conversations and the many "LAUGHS" we shared with each conversation.
I will always be thankful to you for overseeing the construction and sharing in my "vision" on what has become the 'THE HOUSE OF LOVE" and your many visits. I always could count on a good meal delivered to work when you were here.
Your days of pain and suffering are over now, until we see each other "OVER THE RAINBOW", I will close in saying " I LOVE YOU" (just like we closed our conversations).
Remember, you are an "ANGEL" you can fly!!!!!
A "BIG" eternal hug, Frankie

Dad, seems like years since you've been gone but the memories of you will always be close to my heart forever. Each new day is a struggle for me to realize that I can only communicate with you spiritually. It would be selfish of me to want you here after all you're suffering you've been through. I'm trying to comprehend that Dad, but it's not easy for me to do. I know you're looking down on me and telling me not to cry that "I'm gonna be ok". Nick has been waiting in heaven to greet you, and for that I'm glad you are both together now. You will always be a special Dad in my heart. Love you always and miss you....until we meet again, Your Daughter, Dolores

We have only known him for a short time, but once you meet him he makes you feel that you have known each other for a very long time. It was our pleasure to have known Gus. Many good things can be said about Gus, but one of the many things that stand out is that he was a true patriout of this great country. He will surely be missed. He is in our thoughts, Rose and Chuck Serra
