Sara Caswell Pearce

Cincinnati - Sara Caswell Pearce was born on the Monopoly board (on Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City) on September 28th, 1952. She passed away at the age of 68 on December 27th, 2020 at her home in Cincinnati. Sara was dedicated to print and paper in all its forms. A writer for her high school newspaper Sara graduate from Rutgers University in New Jersey with a double major in English and Art History. She subsequently went on to earn her Masters of Library Science at Rutgers as well. However, a holiday party where she brought her astounding chocolate chip cookies resulted in an invitation to cover food for the Philadelphia Bulletin. This began a long career in newspapers. As a food writer, features editor, and visual arts columnist. As a journalist Sara worked in Philadelphia (PA), York (PA), Nashville (TN), Orlando (FL), Washington (D.C.), and Cincinnati. After leaving the Cincinnati Enquirer in 2008, Sara turned full-time to her lifelong love of, and skill with, paper arts. Working with antique and vintage print material, Sara established herself as a collage artist. She used this old material to create vibrant new pieces, often with a sharp or strange twist. Later, her repertoire expanded to include intricate cut paper. Her work was featured in shows from Cincinnati to Loveland (CO) always with an eye towards theme and experimentation. Starting in 2018, she served as the first artist in residence for the Mercantile Library in downtown Cincinnati. In addition to fine art pieces, Sara also produced a series of greeting cards known for their sly verbal and visual wit. She is survived by her husband Mark, daughter Laura, sister Helen, and brothers Richard, John, and Matthew. No remembrance service will be held at this time due to the pandemic. Memorials may be made to the following non-profits in no particular order of preference, Cincinnati Book Arts Society, The Lloyd Library, The Mercantile Library, Tiger Lilly Press or the charity of your choice.
