Bruce Cogburn Obituary

Bruce Posey Cogburn

Candler - Bruce Posey Cogburn, 81, of Candler, passed away New Years Eve, December 31, 2019, at his home.

Born in Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Louis and Lucille Gambrell Cogburn.

He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy following 20 years of service.

A musician and entertainer (especially at Pisgah View Ranch), Bruce had a way of making everyone smile at his jokes. Always picking and grinning, he loved to sing the satirical songs that he wrote. He also loved spending time in Hawaii and he had many friends far and wide.

He is survived by his daughter, Deneen Cogburn-Caprio; his son, Bruce R. Cogburn; grandchildren, David Cogburn, Joshua Cogburn, Michael Cogburn (Kimberly), Matthew Caprio and Mikayla Caprio, and great-grandchildren, Jacob Cogburn and Mason Cogburn.

No services are scheduled at this time.

In lieu of donations, the family asks for a random act of kindness in Bruce's memory.

Meet Bruce at the Pisgah View Ranch in June 2019. He brought his guitar (slightly out of tune) into the dining room. He played and I blew on the Harmonica. Bruce could play anything by ear. What a great and fun guy. RIP, Bruce.

So sorry to hear this. Bruce was a cousin; but, I had not seen him in some time. I have fond memories of visiting for a week at a time with my aunt Lucille (his mother) when I was a teenager. My thoughts are with the family.

It was by chance that we met Bruce Cogburn. My wife and I were at Ingles, enjoying their steak night. He and I were standing in line, both wearing our Navy hats. He was alone, so I invited him to join us. We of course shared our Navy stories and had a great time. Reading all these stories really tells what a great guy he was. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

It is with a heavy heart that I write about my friend Bruce Cogburn. We shared the same interest in politics and therefore we had many long telephone calls about the word today. I will miss his intelligent and well documented discussions of things that are happening in the world today. Bruce was a very kind and generous man and my children always loved for him to visit as he would bring donuts and his guitar. He will be missed...

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Bruce. He was so talented. I knew him in his younger days. He was brother to my uncle Joel Cogburn. He always had that twinkle in his eye. Prayers are with his family and friends.

We met Bruce in December, 2015, at the elevator of the condo where we were staying in Waikiki while visiting our son who was in the Hawaiian Air National Guard and where Bruce was spending the winter. Immediately, he felt like an old friend and what a surprise it was to meet someone from our area! He recommended the breakfast buffet across the park at the Hale Koa (the hotel for the military which our former congressman when we lived in Virginia had been instrumental in founding) Bruce accompanied us so we could get in on his military pass and what a delightful time we had!!! When we returned to Waikiki a couple of months later for a change of command ceremony, we called Bruce and made a repeat visit to the Hale Koa. Meeting Bruce has provided us with many special memories, We knew from the "git go" he was an extraordinary person and we are thankful for having known him, if only briefly.

As you mourn his passing, may God's presence be with you and give you comfort.
