Ernest Weisberger Obituary

Ernest Weisberger, 94, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Tiffany Court, Kingston, PA, his residence for the last few months. The last of his immediate family, he was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Regina Weisberger; his sister Betty Bohm; and his brothers William and Marvin Weisberger. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Weisberger; his two children, Wendy Kranson and Steven Weisberger (Denise Marks); his two granddaughters, Emily Norris (Michael) and Jessie Weisberger; his grandson Dane Weisberger; and two great granddaughters, Brooke and Kaitlyn Norris. Ernie was a devoted husband, a beloved father, a proud and affectionate grandfather and great grandfather, and an adored uncle to his many nieces and nephews. They all will miss him dearly.

His passion was golf and until the onslaught of his first stroke at the age of 93 he played a good, competitive game, often a few times a week, with his golf buddies at Fox Hill Country Club where he was a member for 54 years.

Ernie graduated from Kingston High School in 1935 near the top of his class, attended Bucknell Junior College (now Wilkes University), Ohio University, and finally graduated from the University of Scranton. In September 1940, he was accepted at Dickinson Law School in Carlisle, PA. He finished second in his class his first year, just in time to be drafted into the US Army in 1941--six months before Pearl Harbor. Almost five years later he was discharged as Captain in the Army Air Corps. He was a true example of the Greatest Generation.

A few years after Ernie's marriage to Barbara in 1949, he and his younger brother Marvin founded Marvell Kitchens, Inc., a nationally-respected manufacturer of custom kitchens, where Ernie served as President until his retirement in the early 1990's. Betterhouse, Inc., a showroom and retail outlet for the design and installation of kitchens, bathrooms, and other cabinetry was also established by Ernie and Marvin.

Ernie was a long-time member of Temple Israel and the Jewish Community Center, both in Wilkes-Barre, and he also served in several organizations, including B'nai B'rith, as President, and The Jewish Home in Scranton, as a Board member.

Ernie always will be remembered as a non-judgmental, calm, all-around good guy. Even amidst chaos, he could be counted on to do what was needed and what was right.

The Weisberger family wishes to express its gratitude to Dr. Robert Engel, Tammy Engel, and more recently Dr. John Carey as well as CRNP's Fran McGlynn and John Rosenkranz. Special thanks to all caring "angels" from Comfort Keepers, Tiffany Court, and in his last days, Hospice of the Sacred Heart whose commitment, love, and warmth made his last year so much more peaceful.

Funeral service will be held, Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 11:30 am at the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Inc. 348 S. River Street, Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Larry Kaplan and Cantor Aaron Abraham officiating. Interment will be in Temple Israel Cemetery, Swoyersville.

Shiva will be observed at 571 Charles Ave. Kingston, 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, 2-4 and 6 - 8 Wednesday and 2 - 4 on Thursday.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to Temple Israel or charity of donor's choice.
