Mr. Hamm was the founder and president of the Hamm Companies with its home offices located in Perry. He retired in 1990. He was a member of Perry United Methodist Church and the Perry Lions Club and also served as the mayor of Perry. He served on the board of directors for the Kansas Contractors Association and was a longtime board member of Kaw Valley Bank. Survivors include a son, Gary Hamm, Perry, from his marriage to Avis Tyrell Hamm; and a daughter, Marita Hermann, Bradenton, Fla., from his marriage to Ruth Allen Hamm. Also surviving are his grandchildren, three granddaughters, Moni Hamm Gray, Nina Lorene Hermann, and Portia Hermann; five grandsons, Rod Hamm, Brad Hamm, Gary Hamm, Jeremy Hamm, and Jared Hermann; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeff Hamm, five sisters and a brother. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Perry-Lecompton High School Auditorium in Perry. Due to safety reasons and lack of parking at the cemetery, private family burial will be in the Underwood Cemetery in Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Perry United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Hamm Scholarship Foundation, a nonprofit organization to enhance educational opportunities in all the area schools of northeast Kansas and may be sent in care of Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, Kan., 66066.

Gary, Helen, Marita and kids: Lyle and I send our condolences on the passing of your dad and grand dad. At 92, he had enjoyed a long and varied life and had accomplished much during his years here on earth. So many people, particularly in the Perry community, and in many other communities, have profited from his businesses, as well as his generosity, For as long as I can remember, there has always been a "Norman Hamm;" I guess, somehow, I thought he was larger than life and that he would always be here. For myself, personally, it is as though yet another chapter in my life has closed and is gone forever. Our families have had a connection that few others have "enjoyed." Through all of the adversities, everyone seems to have made it through it and all have remained friends. I wasn't able to attend either the visitation or the funeral; however, please know that my thoughts and prayers were with you and all of your families.

It has been 50 years since I last saw Norman, as I worked for him under my dad, who operated the quarry for him and was in charge of the road and bridge construction jobs, but I haven't forgotten him. My prayers are with the family.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL. NORMAN IS IN A GOOD PLACE NOW. HE WAS A WONDERFUL MAN. I ENJOYED WAITING ON HIM WHEN HE CAME INTO THE BANK. OF COURSE, HE ALWAYS BROUGHT HIS SIDE KICK "HAMMIE" WITH HIM. WHICH WE ENJOYED ALOT. HAMMIE WOULD MAKE "DEPOSITS", SOME A LITTLE SMELLY. BUT THAT WAS JUST FINE. NORMAN WOULD ALWAYS SCOLD HER AND THEY WOULD BE ON THEIR WAY. HE LOVED HER MUCHLY. WE ENJOYED HIM SO MUCH. HE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL.

SEE YOU IN HEAVEN NORMAN!

For many years I have reminisced about the times I worked in the quarries in the 50's and 60's, the people I met and the conversations with my father, Milferd who was a foreman for Norman until he retired in 1968. It was a great experience. May God bless the family.
